Gallery: Crystal Cove car meet 9-30-06

It's been a while since we last checked in with the goings on at this exotic and classic car meet from Southern California. For those hearing about this for the first time, Crystal Cove is the name of a beach and strip mall near Newport Beach. The mall has hosted a weekly informal car meet that attracts some of the most incredible cars and a who's who from the automotive world. Every Saturday from 7 AM to 9 AM. Slightly overcast skies didn't dim anybody's enthusiasm this week. In fact, the lot was packed again within the first half hour. No great story, just lots of nice images of some incredible cars. Follow the jump for a full gallery with about 30 photos. All of the pics are clickable for wallpaper size downloads. Enjoy.

Man, why do I have to live in Kentucky.... I went to a car show yesterday where my Elise took "Best Exotic". That made me pretty happy but I would much rather get to see more exotic cars like the F40 & Saleen. You can see photos of the rained out Adam Matthews Balloon Festival car show at my blog, http://www.fleur-design.net/lotus/
Lucky California bastards ;)

Every Sunday in Calabasas CA, (northwest Los Angeles) there is a simialr car show. I have attended several of them and the one bad thing is that you no longer apprecaite the rareness of a Ferrari or Lambo or vintage Porsche.

Wow, that DB7 Zagato cab is gorgeous. I never thought one of those would leave a garage.
P.S. Nice pics Frank.

Some of the best cars gather there, even though I live 1 hour away I have not gone there yet. I have to make time for this event for sure.

I've been there to spectate a couple times and it's pretty nice. After living in Orange County for my whole life, only the real rare cars fascinate me. I kinda hate it. On a side note, I also live 1 mile away from Saleen, so S7's around here are a dime a dozen at the local gas station.

Do they give you a free venti-sized Starbucks coffee when you enter the parking lot?
Seriously, every single person in the photos has one!

#7--didn't you know everybody in California is required, by law, to carry a venti Starbuck's cup at all times? Honestly though, most people go to the show, run into Starbuck's or Pacific Whey to get something to drink, and then come out and car watch for a few hours. There's not much else to do at 7 on a Saturday morning. There are some great galleries of pics from this show and the VCR one in Calabassasat these sites:

I only went a few times, but I miss that and Donut Derelicts! Nashville just doesn't have comparable events (yet).

Awesome Photos!
I still need to attend one, but it's soooo early in the morning, gaaawd. Anyways, from what friends told, some of the most nicest cars you can ever see (at a stand still) arise here. A friend of mine saw a R34 GT-R Vspec about a month ago; oh man... I would have love to see that. Weekly event like this is another reason why I love socal.

Some more info on the cars... That Porsche with the white stripe is actually a convertible with a hard top on it, giving it a very interesting side profile. The black ans silver car is a Superformance GT40 kit. The Chatham 7 is a Ultralight R model, that the owner got off a flood sale that had virtually no damage as the water only made it to the hubs.
That E-Type in the main pic is stunning, I shot it 2 weeks ago in the parking lot, it never made it in.
Here are some pics Foogirl and I shot on the 16th.

I live about 10 minutes from this site and I didn't make it. But most Newport parking lots look like this normally regardless of the day.

Anyone notice the street tuned Porsche 904 behind the Superformance GT40 kit car? It's 1 of 6 ever made and the only one with the 'shorty' doors. AND it's in totally unrestored condition. Nice...

I think I parked most of these cars as a valet a Morton's Steak House by the South Coast Plaza. There was a recent statistic about OC and highline purhcases. Some dramatic percentage of this segment were purchased here. Anyone?

Is it me, or do all rich, middle aged white dudes dress the same? It's either the Dick Cheney look, or the long shorts and polo shirt that makes them look like four year olds. Those new ads say it all: Work, dress, weekend, golf. Repeat. Tommy Bahama has a lot to answer for.

not really fair to call the superformance a kit car...
It's complete, minus drivetrain like the Caterham (not called a kit car here)the Noble and the Ariel Atom. These cars would simply not be able to be sold here w/engines due to our laws.
These cars are sold elsewhere w/engines BTW.

Just a heads up, the Crystal Cove meet is being shut down apparently. The owners of that land (The Irvine Company) are getting complaints about too many people showing up so they're shutting the meet down. Apparently, this meet will only happen for two more weekends (10-7 & 10-14) and the people that show up there want to go out with a bang.
So, if you live anywhere close by and have never been, this is your last chance.

rain for tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the final meet at Crystal Cove, rain or shine. We are expecting there to be an enormous turnout if it stays dry, and merely huge if it rains. Starting the following week we'll be meeting at Ford's Premier Auto Group building across the street from the Irvine Spectrum. Right near the junction of the 5 and 405 freeways at Irvine Center Drive and Alton. There are still some other ideas about a permanent home closer to the ocean, but until that materializes, PAG it is.
