VIDEO: "General Lee" Audi Quattro drift car!
What do you get when you mix a "General Lee" paint scheme (always a winner), a turbocharged Audi 80 (a.k.a. 4000) Quattro, and drifting?
Thanks to the speed freaks at Martinsson Racing, one of the best videos ever.
Watch, listen -- oh, the sound of this thing, and be awed.

OK, so what's the deal with drifting? It's not really racing because when the wheels are spinning, there's no traction and the lap times are killed. At best, it seems like a version of the old parking lot burnout contests from when I was a kid. A show for the audience at it's very best, a waste of good rubber at its worst. Just my .02 worth. Bit yawn.

drifting = ploy by tire makers to sell more tires!

Drifting is no different now a days then way back when, some people didn't understand drag racing or Nascar. Everyone has a sport, even if it's not timed or based on laps. Drifting is not one of my favorite sports to watch, but I sure do have respect for guys that have THAT much control over a car. It does take talent to do that.
I got a kick out of that video... 3 wheels smoking!! How cool is that!

Drifting = loads of fun to watch. And doing it this well requires no small amount of skill.

Calling drifting a sport is like calling figure skating a sport.
Rocket Punch @ Sep 26th 2006 12:28PM
Drifting is like Ice figure skating on tarmac with cars, where a winner is determined by a panel of judges opinion.
Drifting is an event that awards people for driving badly. Thats why most people who can't drive loves it.
Any non-time based event/competition that involves a car should never be called a motorsport. There is already a name for it and it is call "stunt show"

I can almost smell the burnt rubber.
good stuff.

I really enjoy drifting and it's getting more popular here in the US. The website CarTV has a lot of drifting videos, including some that explain how the sport works and the judging. Here is a link to a cool one of lots of spin-outs:

Do judges have to have all their teeth?
chua @ Sep 26th 2006 1:08PM
This form of drifting is definitely nothing more than a show, but it doesn't detract from the skill necessary in doing it. Anyone who calls any pro drifter a bad driver needs to prove that they have the delicate wheel and throttle control to keep a car in a balanced drift. I for one couldn’t even approach that, and neither could most people here. If you want racing with a drifting edge to it, and not this type of crazy power sliding, look up Japanese-born "touge" racing. Drifting isn't supposed to be the fastest way around a corner, but the most fun.

Sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
Yes, drifting is a sport. Get over it. I prefer racing myself, but I won't try to proclaim drifting a non-sport just because it's not my preference.
SCCA-XR @ Sep 26th 2006 1:17PM
I believe drifting is more a "sport" of the Red Bull and J-spec crowd then the toothless. Besides, the Audi sounded interesting for a turbo four (would have been more interesting if it was a turbo five or a coupe) but the driver's skill wasn't worth a darn. I'm NOT a drift fan but from what I understand, its carefully controlled slipping, not just flying all over the place and constantly bouncing off the rev-limiter.

No sport is so funny as drifting
James @ Sep 26th 2006 1:26PM
Judging is pretty involved. In a drifting sport drivers are measured for their angles, distance to obsticals (without hitting them), speed into angles and speeds coming out of angles, along with a number of other items.
There is a three part video series that goes into the judging and techniques. Here is a link to the video of the judging:

I'm not trying to push CarTV.com, they are just a great site for Drifting videos. They also have a bunch of "crash reels" from different drifting events - lots of fun to watch.

Redneck Neo-Nazis rejoice!

"Redneck Neo-Nazis rejoice!"
I hate to tell you, but I don't think rednecks or neo-Nazis are very big fans of drifting as far as I know.
I do know that I wouldn't pay to watch it.
chua @ Sep 26th 2006 2:09PM
If anyone actually bothered to pay attention, these aren't "rednecks", they're Swedish. Listen to the announcer, and for further proof, the link is to an .se page.

9 sec. 1/4 mile?
If you dig into the site they have under "facts":
"402meter 9,97 205km/h 1,6 60 fot"
That'll be 1/4 in 9.97 secs @128 mph and a 1.6 60-foot...
On *that* thing? how much power is it making?
