VIDEO: Rollover avoidance taken to the extreme
We're not sure which event this clip came from, nor are we aware of who was behind the wheel, but this takes the proverbial cake when it comes to driver skill, rollover avoidance and downright luck. Not to mention the sharp cliff the BMW's pilot came within inches of tumbling over while recovering from his two-wheeled antics.

Uh yeah..that was just pure luck that the car didn't fully tip over.

That's old, but is amazing anyway.

Pretty treacherous rallye course with that death crater

I'm gonna go with: talent drastically increases the odds that you'll get lucky. True for accident avoidance, sinking a 60 foot putt in a golf tournament, and getting the hot chick from the bar to come home with you. I'm sure there are other examples as well.
That driver knew what the hell he was doing.

Looks like Dakar. I haven't seen people race X5s in much else.

Ohhh, that was way more than luck -- watch the front wheels cut perfectly to right the vehicle. And turning into the direction that the back end was going to correct the fish tail over the cliff -- that takes balls to stear towards the cliff -- simply great driving with some luck thrown in.

I agree with tre. It took a ton of skill to steer out of that near-rollover...although I would guess the cliff wasn't really at the forefront of the drivers' thoughts at that moment...just getting the vehicle upright was.

I want to see the video of that guys face when he saw this video. RC hit it right - he probably was totally unaware of the cliff. Helluva job.

I love Rally Sport! None of those wimpy oval circles and stopping a race for a light misting of rain. check out this "Year in Review" video of Rally, has lots of jumps, crashes and an amazing ending:

Warning: Audio at end is not suitable for work, keep the speakers low, but you'll want to hear! Notice the guy starts asking his co-driver "Are you alive" while they are STILL ROLLING!

That guy running should go and pray for 6 hours each night. :)

Tre at post #5 is correct about the front wheels. Add to that the application of full throttle to the rear, (see the dirt fly?) and you get the full montie. Traction control? No need for this guy!

Luck isn't what's steering those tires to counter against the force pushing roll the car. Kudos to the driver.

Agree with Tre (#5) and the first poster doesn't have a clue. That was an amazing piece of emergency driving that was about 75% skill and 25% luck brought on by the skill - the timing of the traction applied by the driver and the wheel control is what saved him - the application of such at the right times, plus the distance he had to play with was just enough to avoid the cliff fall.

Old video - saw it on youtube months ago. Great driving skill though.
Anyone notice the guy running in front of the X5? While the car is still on two wheels, the spectator was running *right into the path of the car* - it was only the violent left/right when it landed that put the spectator out of harms way.

I still like that one hillclimb video where the SUV in question makes it ot the top, lands on it side, flips back upright, and then goes down its merry way like it was nothing.

I'm thinking maybe that spectator should have jumped over the cliff. He's probably still cleaning his underwear.

I say this was all skill...except that part about not going off the cliff, which was luck!
I would have call this luck if he saved the car once. He did it twice! That's not luck!

At the end, if you look carefully, you can see an Egyptian flag and a Jordanian Flag at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Im guessing it was an Egyptian driver and Jordanian co-pilot.
Go Arab drivers! *represents*
