Selective speed bumps only nail you if you speed
Yeah, somebody finally figured out a way not to penalize the rest of us for people who speed in low-limit areas. Observe the embedded video, which depicts a new invention by Gwyn Harvey. Selective speed bumps gauge your speed upon approach, a sign flashes to warn you if you're speeding, and only if you continue to speed do they rise up out of the ground to slow your ass down. If you're going the speed limit, no need to slow down, you're doing things right.
Thanks to Martijn for the tip.

Such a thing was already developed and tested in the Netherlands. In a urban enviroment they used a system with two steel beams wich would go up 5cm when a driver was detected speeding. It was a failure because drivers soon figured out that if they were braking while passing the beams the speedbeam couldn't handele the extra force and would brake. After 3 destroyed speedbeams costing aprox 35k euro/beam the project was canceled. Furthermore the beams made to much noise for those living nearby. Motorcyclists also objected against the speedbeam because of safety concerns.

I despise speed bumps and often speed over them just to spite the people who put them there. Yea, it's a rough bump in my Jeep Wrangler, but I don't mind, so long as I am not doing my car any harm. Does anyone have any information on whether or not speed bumps actually do any damage to a car or truck when they are taken at relitively high speeds (ie 35 or 40 mph)?

From the animation, just steer your wheels AROUND.
I hate speed humps/tables.

I remember years back I would scrape the tail pipe on my Saab when I went over speed tables at low speed. Even if went over them at a few MPH. After a little experementation I found that if I hit them at 40-45MPH the car would glide over them and not scrape the tail pipe.
