Acer has announced its newest Ferrari-themed notebooks, the 5000 and ultra-portable 1000 series. Powered by the latest AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile chip running at 2.0GHz, and encased in carbon-fiber, the 64-Bit Ferrari 5000 promises a performance edge over the other supercar-logo'd laptops.
Acer tells us that the Ferrari 5000 series utilizes the very latest in video communication, cutting-edge multimedia technology and wireless (and wired) connectivity, "to make it an all-round winner, and the perfect companion to mobile champions." It ships with a 15.4-inch widescreen display, 2 gig of 667 Mhz RAM, a 160GB S-ATA hard drive, and an ATI Radeon Xpress 1600 with up to 512 MB of HyperMemory (256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 VRAM, up to 256 MB of shared memory).
Also featured are an HD-DVD Optical Drive, 5-in-1 Card Reader, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth® 2.0+EDR, a built-in 1.3MP Acer OrbiCam™, Acer Bluetooth® VoIP phone, as well as wireless Bluetooth™ Optical Mouse and Microsoft Windows® XP Professional preinstalled. The 1000 Series, we're told, also packs a lot of hardware into a frame that carries a 12.1-inch display.
Although other laptops on the market might deliver better overall performance at lower prices, they obviously can't match the passion of anything with a Ferrari logo on it. Certainly there is a market for auto-branded laptops, as the Acer Ferraris have to face off with the Asus Lamborghini, Itronix HUMMER and the newly released Koenigsegg CCX laptop.

what are you talking about? the ferrari editions acer has been releasing are no more than other comparably spec'd models. in fact it is often much less! definitely none of this "3 times the price" nonsense.
acer is famous for making banging laptops with the latest and greatest components for hundreds if not thousands less than the competition.

WillDaThrill what are you talking about 3 times the price. Find me any other notebook with the same configuration that is 3 time less expensive - bull'sht.

Yes they are a great value and great looking.

I'm writing this on an Acer laptop, it's the cheapest lap top I ever got and the only one that never gave me hardware problems (also have a fujitsu and a toshiba).

I hope they are tougher than their tablet PCs. I have sent mine in for warranty repair twice already. Melted power plug and failed tablet hinge. Took 2~3 months each time to repair.

Acer makes great notebooks at a great price, we sell them through my business.
Want one? There are 3, all higher end.
$1,869.00
$1,999.00
$2,299.00
For what they offer they are well priced.

i vote that these car badged computers not be posted anymore.
dont be stupid, this thing is a ripoff. you could get a better deal at bestbuy! but then you wouldnt have to suffer the embarassment of using a ferrari laptop

Hand built and expensive. This could be a Ferrari...

Does this Ferrari laptop crash as much as Ferrari Enzos?

I could almost imagine a Ferrari owner wanting one of these, but what makes me laugh are the guys who don't own a Ferrari and buy one of these.
XJ @ Sep 13th 2006 12:19AM
Acer? Are you kidding me? I've onwed an Acer once. Granted, it was a desktop but...NEVER AGAIN!
WillDaThrill @ Sep 13th 2006 2:01AM
I'm not talking trash about the computer, I'm saying that they'll probably charge more for it because it has a Ferrari emblem on it. I know Acer makes kick-ass laptops, no doubt about it. I can almost bet it'll cost more that the standard just because of it.....maybe not 3 times more; and if they are less, well, you got me there. Car badged appliances are just lame (unless you're into NASCAR or Indy racing for that matter), but still lame. I mean, what are you going to do with it if you don't own, sell/lose the car?
Man, I assume by your posts that you guys are well educated, but you sure don't read well. I read my post 10 times wondering where in it I said that they were crappy or substandard.

hey, just need to add a Ferrari badged laptop GPS receiver, and put it in the car for the best of all worlds - with the badge if thats your thing :)
