New Scirocco: More info, new pics

Authentic information about the upcoming Volkswagen Scirocco is starting to come to light and AutoExpress seems to be leading the charge. The Concept S, as it is called in show-going form, will debut in Paris this year and will bear the closest resemblance to what will be displayed in showrooms in 2008.
The newly developed platform will underpin the upcoming versions of the Golf Mark VI, although in the Scirocco application, suspension and ride characteristics will be more geared towards tarmac sticking versus commuter loafing.
The engine choices here in the States will include the 2.0 TSI mill that makes its way into the engine bays of every damn vehicle in V-Dub's lineup, with future plans of adding the 3.2-liter V6. European buyers will also get the choice of a 170 hp turbo-diesel. Power will either be routed through a 6-speed manual or the delicious DSG.
Pricing is a mute point now, but expect something in the mid-to-high $20k realm.

...and tipping the scale at 5300lbs! Seriously, why does the new GTI weight so much (3300 lbs)? More than my volvo sedan! Makes me cringe to see what this one is going to weigh.

Not bad, don't care for the cut line of the rocker panel with the door breaking the line.

the only thing I don't like about it is the front end, it's a smooth looking coupe...with the front end of a GTI, which I already don't like on that car.

My, what a lovely VW tC. I've always wondered what one would look like without a glass roof...

Anybody know what sort of drivetrain this will have?
I am guessing that like all other VW it will never be a RWD only, but can somebody please cheer me up by telling me it will be available in 4 motion (VW's 4 wheel drive system).
If not than it will just be another pretty face with dull dynamics.

Yeah, good luck! With 3500 lbs to lug around and probably a 200 hp engine ... it's going to be left behind at every light and twisty road. :)

Reminds me of a Q7 that spent too much time in the dryer. Why are so many cars going tall these days and trying to look like psuedo SUVs?

The front end looks nothing like the new GTI. Its pretty much straight off of the new R32. The headlights and mirrors look like they are off the Eos. And it has frameless doors. I was unaware of Volkswagen making a 2.0 TSI engine at this point, unless the author meant the 2.0T FSI? In which case the author either needs more coffee, a better editor, or to stop writing about cars.
Most likely it will be FWD. I haven't read any report that it will shar drive trains with the Audi TT, which would be the logical base to create an AWD Scirroco, but no it will not be RWD and neither was the original. One can only hope it has an LSD from the factory if it's FWD.
I'll save my judgement of it until it comes to America, which will probably be 2010...

I can't get past the "mute" point. I guess I should. Irregardless, not everyone done paid good attention in class, and I could care less.
Yeah, sweet wheels. 4motion (manual only, please!) would rock.

I'm not sure where you guys are getting these weights from. The new GTI actually weighs out to about 3150-3200 GAWR. My guess is the new Scirroco couldn't weight more than that. Not even the new Passat 2.0T weighs 3500 lbs. Then again I haven't seen too much accurate info associated with this article anyway.

VW should buy up every MkII Scirocco, drop in the 2.0 FSI and add the 16v body kit. Sell it at cost.
If VW does that... then they've done something.

Jesse James called, and he wants his wheels back!
Seriously those things belong on a 96 s-10 lowrider or something.
I also have a sick feeling that the 4motion version will scrape up on 40k. ugh no market for this vehicle at all.

Germans "auto-motor-sport" magazine has a totally diffrent drawing in it's current issue.
The only thing that is for sure is, that there will be a VW Concept S presented by the end of this month(!).

I understand bringing the name back since it's the trendy thing to do, but with the same power plant and drive train options as the GTi; where does this car "fit" in their lineup? I really don't think it fits at all. It's VW's excuse to use the new TT shell for something.
Give it AWD (or at least RWD), give it some real power, and maybe I could see it. Right now, this makes no sense to me. It is a good looking car though.

Actually, I guess my RWD comment is stupid as VW/Audi hasn't ever has a RWD car that I know of.

I am all for the Scirocco coming back, but with the price range i think it may see, it could be another Corrado! Great car that no one wants to drop the coin on when brand new.

funksobruva: "9. I can't get past the "mute" point. I guess I should. Irregardless, not everyone done paid good attention in class, and I could care less."
Maybe you shouldn't critique the misspelling of "moot", when you are using words that don't exist in the English language. "Irregardless" isn't a word.
Hey, I am a pretty bad speller and typist, and have poor grammer too.

Wow, they went from "really cool" to "really tame". Way to go Volkswagen.
This things not going to win on nostalgia alone, it WILL need more aggressive styling and more power in order to be a success.

What's up with the picture. If I read "new pics" on the headline, I expect new pics, not a random photochop that's been around since 2005!
If the 'rocco looks anything like that chop, it will be nothing but a Passat Coupe, which we've already got in a sense: The Eos.
I'm hoping the Concept S looks more like Huckfeldt's chop for Auto Bild:
