VW Tiguan begins to take shape

Volkswagen's oddly named Tiguan (hey, the people have spoken), has broken cover on the current issue of Germany's Auto Bild magazine. Although clearly a computer-generated interpretation of VW's cute 'ute, the cover shot gives a more realistic rendering of what is to be Volkswagen's answer to the RAV4 and CR-V. Worthy items of note include the high and tidy belt-line, minimalist C-pillar and pseudo-spoiler, ala Touareg/Cayenne.
As a reminder, the Tiguan will be based off the current Golf platform and make it's debut at the Los Angeles auto show this coming November. Production is slated to begin in 2008.

I hope that VW brings this to North America in a Diesel. This is a large segment that is going to lose some steam due to rising fuel prices. An economical (ie Diesel) version should sell well.

Looks like any other Kia/Hyundai/Toyota/Honda mini SUV offering with BMW headlights. Nothing distintive here.....

#2, not really. It doesn't quite have that univeral Japanese/Korean blandness -- that overwhelming aura or boredom and triteness. Maybe VW can come closer with the next iteration.

I don't like it or see anything special there. Looks like their trying to go after Infiniti's FX market with a small SUV.

Is that . . .
Tiguan as in Tih-gwan (using the i sound from iguana) or
Tiguan as in Ty-gwan (using the i sound from tiger) or
Tiguan as in Tee-gwas (which sounds best to me)?????
I'm confused by VW's odd naming of vehicles :)

They will if they indicate the 4 banger they plan to use for the jetta and passat will fit. If not, no diesel. Audi's head of diesel design has been quite volcal in indicating VAG has no desire to design a diesel range just for North America, it's too costly for them, and we're not their largest market.

Looks dang good. More muscular and off-road ready than other compact SUVs on the road. I fear it may be a little to small and priced too high, but I'm sure it'll still be a winner - not a volume leader, but a top competitor.
My question is, if being unveiled later this year, why is production starting waaaaaaaaay off in 2008??? Surely VAG has the resources to put out products faster, especially important new entries like this. Unless that's MY, which would be fine.

IMO, it looks good. It might not be trail rated or even good for any off-roading, but that's not what we buy SUV's for anyway. It offers the elevated driving position and utility that soccer mom's seem to love.
The 2.0T engine has shown power output up to 240hp so it would be a good fit. I wouldn't hold my breath for a diesel. It's just not profitable enough to produce in the US...if they bring it over here to begin with.
The only thing they can do to screw it up is make it front wheel drive only.

Does this mean I won't get a 2007/08 Jetta(Rabbit) wagon? Most disappointing.

if I remember correctly, Tiguan is VW's answer to X3. It's not even in Rav4 or CR-V's price range to begin with.
Anyways .. this scan is old.

VW would probably increase sales by 10% if they would just gives their vehicles names that could be pronounced.

Please, stop with the stupid comments about the name unless we all are going to join in denouncing other made up and sometimes difficult to pronounce names like: Acura, Altima, Maxima, Corolla, Camry, Lexus, Sentra, Tiburon, Elantra, Azera and so forth. Just stop with it. Those names, and Toureg, have not exactly stopped their sales.

Umm... I thought the name was determined by popular vote. They had 5 names, and people could vote for which they like the best... wasn't this a story on Autoblog?

I just read these stories to see someone abbreviate Volkswagen Auto Group as VAG, then I chuckle to myself and go off, my day brightened.

Tiguan has perfect back design but I think there must be a little bit some modifications on front side and wheels to get best harmony.I can see some unnecessary figures inside the headlights...
