Suzuki SX4 goes on sale in Japan

On July 4th, Suzuki introduced its new SX4 hatchback to the market in Japan. On sale in Europe since March, and headed to the US in Q3 2006 as an '07 model, Japan gets a range of SX4 models with two engine choices. The 1.5-liter four makes 110 horsepower, while the 2.0L generates 145. (In the US, we're getting only the 2.0.) All cars receive a 4-speed automatic and in Japan, customers can choose between 2WD or AWD. US cars will all come with AWD standard.
From bottom to top, the lineup is as follows:
- SX4 1.5E
- SX4 1.5G
- SX4 1.5XG
- SX4 2.0S (shown above)
In October, a 2.0XS model will join the Japanese lineup, equipped with the visual elements (roof rails, etc.) seen on the 1.5XG. Prices range from approximately 1.4 million to 2 million Yen (around $13,000 to $17,000 USD). The US model will retail for between $15,000 and $18,000.

Next October i'll get my SX4 1.6GLX.Unfortunately here in Greece the SX4 is imported with the M16A engine delivered from Swift Sport.Differences are the plastic(!!!!) intake plenum, normal aluminium pistons and rods and lowered compression ratio. Also, something else that disappoints me is the fact that you can't buy it without the roof rail and the all around plastic guards and if you try removing them you got yourself a nice car with holes around it:( . Recently i took it for a test drive and i was really happy with the engine, torque is available from low RPMs and the 0-100km(~64m) came in approximately 8.9" while the book says 10.9".Just can't wait till i lay my hands on it.

Something i forgot to mention is that the M16A pumps out 107hp for the SX4 while the M16A in the Swift Sport 125hp. Also, we 'll never get the sedan version of the SX4 and the J20A engine equiped version. When i get the car deffinately gonna take a dyno test cause i doubt if it has 107hp while the 1.5 115hp.

What a great upgrade over the aerio it is replacing (as the small AWD suzuki).

I guess it's not bad, but why can't suzuki make cars as exciting as their bikes?

The fact that it only comes as an automatic ruins it for me personally. I really like the AWD though and it looks half decent.

All these small AWD vehicles come as autos only anymore, unfortunately. When it was first introed, the RAV4 was available with an auto or manual (tho I think the manual was FWD only). The CR-V was auto first and then became available with a manual...try and find one, especially with AWD (that combo doesn't exist). Suzuki, you need to build a car that no one else is building/selling, the SX4 is a Matrix/Vibe but in auto and AWD only....I don't think that is enough.

My SX4 is a 5 speed and with the mods I've added it is easily churning 170+ hp. No matrix I've seen is touching it. I am also getting around 28 mpg when I keep my foot out of it.

The US SX4 will have manual and auto, but standard i-AWD. The no manual-AWD combo was a big complaint on the Aerio... The problem with the SX4 is forward vision with that bonus pillar behind the A pillar and before the door...

You are right this is a big problem with the Sx4
I am trying for months to get this problem to attention to some traffic organisations in the Netherlands.

Why can't the U.S. get the 110 horsepower engine? It would have better gas mileage and still do 0-60 in less then ten seconds, I'm sure. I bet when the real-world mileage comes out on this, it will be closer to 25mpg on day to day driving. Why buy a small car for $17,000 that gets 28mpg when you can get a larger car for damn near that much money and the same milage?
My new Kia Spectra5, 8000 miles on it now, still only gets 23 to 25 mpg doing just cruise controlled highway miles. My '98 v6 Malibu still gets 28mpg doing the same route(my wife and I both did this trip). Very dishearting.

Howard, the obvious AWD choice would be Subaru, and they DO offer manual trannys in their small models, Forester and Impreza. Think outside of the Toyota/Honda box - check one out if you want AWD and manual.
The SX4's a nice looking little car, I think. It'll be interesting to read reviews and to see how its durability turns out to be. I think it's a good move by Suzuki.

If Suzuki really wants to make an impression, they need to sell a roadgoing version of their 320 hp SX4 rally car. As it stands, in the US, the Evo and STi are the only cars playing in that market, I would love to see some more competition.

I waited a little too long for this. Instead, I got a 2.5 liter,AWD wagon w/ 61 cubic feet of storage and perfect 50/50 AWD system. 177 hp, 5-speed.....
Saab 9-2X for$ 18K thanks to GM's generous rebates.

Jim Brown, you're only getting 23-25 mpg on the highway in a Kia Spectra? How fast are you going??
I got over 35 mpg on a recent trip to Washington DC in my Passat with the cruise set at 65!

Most of the time, the cruise was set at about 70. The speed limit is 65 so we were just going fashionable over the limit.:) About 220 of highway speeds and about 15 to 20 of in town stuff.

Hey guys this is not replacing the aerio. This is a small SUV. This SX-4 and the Fiat Sedici are twins.
