MINI GP sells out fast

The limited edition model MINI GP has already sold out before the first one has been delivered to a customer. All 444 units that MINI UK was allotted were snatched up, and the company is now negotiating with other countries and has acquired an additional 15 to sell, of which only ten are left. BMW/MINI planned to build only 2000 models of this MINI Cooper S with the factory-installed John Cooper Works GP Kit, but may think twice considering the car is selling out like a World Cup match.
The MINI GP is the fastest production money of all time thanks to its 218 bhp supercharged engine and various weight saving accoutrements. 0-62 mph occurs under 6.5 seconds later and the little hot hatch reaches terminal velocity at 146 mph. All of the add ons are reportedly worth about 10,000 ($18,440 USD), while the car itself goes for 22,000 ($40,568 USD).

I dig those wheels.

Yeah, they are pretty good-looking wheels.
It's great that they're doing this as a one-off, since at the price it'd likely sell for in the U.S. (probably around $30-35,000) it couldn't be competitive.
But does that mean they won't sell every single one they build? Certainly not.

The Mini is universally loved but I don't think it is recognized as a form of currency ("fastest production money").

The fastest production money...perhaps you intended to say "mini"

Again - Autoblog is insisting on using straight currency coversion. Oh well. Maybe the editors will read the comments someday.

Actually, in the US it sells for $31,150 which includes the delivery fee. That's an amazing price considering how many people spec their cars already. There are still a few left here, but they are going fast.

A recent Motor Trend test of the Cooper S netted a 6.4-second 0-60 time. I'm certainly not suggesting that the standard car is faster than these special editions (0-60 times vary greatly depending on surface, altitude, driver, etc...), but that it seems like a lot of extra money to take a few tenths off your autocross times.
I suppose that's not what these particular MINIs are about, though. They're about styling, exclusivity, and whatever subjective improvements the numbers don't capture (I haven't personally driven a Cooper Works).

is not about tenths of a second
is power, is status... you see a mini on the street and smile, you see a mini cooper S and smile twice, but when you see a jonh cooper works you just stare ad infinitum wishing that mini was yours...
the mini GP is just th next level.
great!!!

I'm amazed at the audience for these cars. Sure they're fun, but for what they cost and their spotty quality history (with some real horror stories in the mix) you have to be brave.
