After waxing loquaciously about Americans' lack of class struggle, inner outdoorsmen, and their 'barbaric' tendencies, Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson finally winds up at something four-wheeled: a Volkswagen (Transporter) T30 TDI 174 Sportline, what he figures is the UK's equivalent of a U.S. pickup truck. Clarkson finds the van "jolly big," with enough room up front to sit three with their load of chicken feed. But it's the Transporter's speed that gives him an inkling as to what it must be like to drive a quick American truck: 0 to 62 in 12.2 seconds, all in a chrome-wheeled vehicle too big for most parking spaces. (Umm...  if you think the VeeDub's fast, Jer-- we've got something in a Dodge Ram SRT-10 to show you)
Would he buy one? Weeehl... no. Clarkson sees no other purpose for the van after dropping off his purchases. More chicken feed for us, then.

What I wouldn't do for a TDI T5 in the US! I'm resigned to driving a B4 TDI Variant. I had an old Syncro Vanagon and I miss it like my old banana-seat bike of days gone by, If only Americans and VW would wise up this would be the best of the best family van if the price was right. Mileage, speed, space, comfort, handling, style, durability, it's all there...

That was an entertaining read. Read just like watching Top Gear (or 5th gear) whichever Clarkson is on. Lets see tiff do donuts in this on his show though.

Clarkson and Tiff have a notorious rivalry since their original Top Gear days (Tiff is now on Fifth Gear, and of course Clarkson is the reason why Top Gear is so awesome). You'll never see Tiff on TG, although I admit he is a better driver by far. Clarkson is funnier though. In a recent ep, he drove a Prodrive P2 (aka a Subie City Car with mad mods) on the skidpad with the center diff turned on until he got so dizzy, he vomited. That was entertaining.

      1 mile = 1.6 km, not the other way around. 0-62mph = 0-100kmh

You are all right. Didn't think this through enough.
I'm usually good at math I swear!

If the internets good for anything it's having your $ss handed to you.....

Just to mention in case people don't catch on.

The "0 to 62 in 12.2 seconds" is most probably measured in Km per hour not MPH. This equates to about 0 to 40 miles per hour.

If I'm correct this translates to a 0-60 mph time of roughly 7.5 secs! Screamingly fast by Van standards!

No it was miles per hour - the mile is one of the few imperial measurements they still hang on to in the UK. 0-62mph corresponds to 0-100kmh.

Yes, Clarkson is as much (or more so) a nationalistic zealot as most Brits--and Americans, and Japanese (Proud Japanese, I'm looking at you here), or any other country for that matter--but first and foremost, Clarkson is an entertainer. And he entertains very well.

Same reason I enjoy reading Michael Moore. They're both essentially sold-out windbags that are just on point enough to make you crack a smile between their exaggerations and logical fallacies.

He mentioned Dodge Ram in the article.

"And the equivalent of the biggest, baddest, V10est, Dodgest Rammest of the lot is the van you see photographed here."
ummm...ya got it backwards...it'd be even slower if he were referring to 0-62 as kph. if it took him 12.2 seconds to get to 40 mph, how could it be 7.5 seconds to get to 60mph? Flux capacitor?

      clarkson is a tool.

top gear is mildy entertaining, but he needs to stfu about american-this or american-that. He thinks he has america figured out, but he doesn't.
