Lincoln MKX looking for friends on MySpace
Why pay millions of dollars to advertise your new CUV in print media when you can design a free MySpace page for it in seconds and probably get more exposure? The upcoming Lincoln MKX, which will arrive in 4 months, 14 days, 22 hours and 20 minutes according to its BlingyBob countdown timer, has now got its own page on MySpace with a blog, music (currently Cheap Trick performing I Want You to Want Me), a General Interests section, PhotoBucket slide show, Friend's list (click here to see who is counted as the MKX's friend so far), as well as a Hot Off The Press list, at the top of which is your favorite auto blog, Autoblog. w00t!Normally we scoff when automakers do this kind of pseudo-viral marketing, but we have to admit this is pretty cute and it probably only cost Lincoln a couple lunch hours playing on the internet.
Thanks Niko for the tip!

So the MKX is a 30 year old female... too bad she has only 10 friends
I don't understand the point of this. i know its free, but who is going to find this "advertisement" while lurking around on Myspace? Do they really expect friend requests to get the MKX out there? Will the MKX be requesting to be my friend - that would be weird, and a little intrusive. I don't want ads asking to be my friend.

No I'm sure there were deals made with myspace and planning meetings and test groups and all kinds of things.
Not to mention that I'm sure the average Lincoln buyer doesn't even know what MySpace is let alone use it.

I think this is the right idea in the wrong market. The average myspace user would probably rather see a tricked out Ford Focus.

Your average Myspace user probably can't afford a Kia let alone a Lincoln or would want one.

#4 you'd be surprised who's on MySpace. Even my mom uses Myspace.

While this is a cost-effective marketing ploy by Lincoln to get the word out, I feel most MySpace users don't want an ad sending them a friend request because it's bizarre and invasive. Also, a good many Lincoln buyers probably don't use MySpace nor do they know what it is. In fact, the whole idea is one very gay-ass idea. Once again, Lincoln strikes out and further sabotages their image.

I think the point of Lincoln making a Myspace page as advertisement for their new MKX is to actually expand the base of Lincoln buyers. They don't really need to reach out to their core customer base. Older people who are buying Lincolns were probably going to buy them anyway. They're trying to appeal to younger car-buyers by advertising in places with younger people. Myspace is a good idea simply because of the broad appeal by the younger set.
Only time will tell how successful this idea was, but at least it's creative and cost-effective.

I think you all would be suprised who uses MySpace. I'm always on the go and its a great way to keep up with my friends and keep track of social outings and events. As for the Lincoln MKX, I think its a really cute idea. A cool example of a company bringing a car to life...I'm so tired of the boring Japanese cars, for once, Lincoln makes a car with an attitude.
I don't understand why people here are dogging on MySpace so much...I bet half of you single men (and married) on here spend more time than you'd like to admit browsing for "friends" and checking out profiles...
Tata for now. ~Andrea

You may be a car geek if you can name the manufactures of the non car names, mkx,mx5,cts,markvii,rl,tsx,XR4ti,sts,cls,ssr,clk,xlr,mkz,cx7,rx8,3000gt,vlr,cl,rsx,srx,mdx,rdx,hhr,glh,rx7,sl,c280,ls400,323gtxi,i30,j30,slk,g,ml,e,929,626,cx9,mr2,b2200,gtv,146,164,900,430,4000,a3,9005,ev1,m3,9-3,240z,q,9-5,es300,db7,350z,f1,460,328,m5,r,gt,a6,db9,57,62,300, OY VEY my head hurts caused i missed over a hundred more, GIVE us normal car names like legend, coupe deville, elderado, lagonda and yes zephyr ! the truly sad thing about all this is that almost all our friends could not name half of these manufactures but us car geeks have every single one of them memorized !!!!!!!!!

Simply put, this is the wrong thing to do. Lincoln does a lot of that though. I'm sure some executive somewhere thought, "Hmm MySpace is a cool destination, I'll put a profile of my new crossover on MySpace and make it insta-cool!"
Sorry Lincoln, it doesn't work that way. There have been two MySpace car profiles that made waves - one being the Honda Element and one being the Dodge Caliber, and I think the Caliber one was executed just about as well as a car company could execute a profile on MySpace.
To just build a glorified brochure on MySpace is nothing more than spam. Maybe Lincoln ought to take a page from Mercury and figure out a plan like The Lucky Ones.

VW did something similar, making a MySpace page for Helga from the "pimp my ride" ads. Seems a better fit stylistically and demographically, plus people will go look just to see pictures of Helga in a miniskirt. and send it to their friends. but there's gotta be something there people want to look at, like a hot chick, or some cool video or something. maybe a film showing a guy getting hit in the nuts, or a dancing squirrel with huge testicles. yep, that's Lincoln all right.
