Toyota announces recall of 1 million vehicles
Toyota Motor Corp. announced Tuesday that it is recalling a whopping 1 million vehicles worldwide to replace defective intermediate shafts and sliding yokes.Over half of the recalled vehicles are in the Japanese domestic market, including Wish, Isis, Prius and other cars built between September 2002 and November 2005. The remaining vehicles are in overseas markets, although no details are available at this time.
No accidents have been reported as a consequence of the defects.

As a prime reason for the series of recalls, the reporter pointed out the "drastic production expansion." In the past year, Toyota's car production over the world went up by 600,000 units. The figure is equivalent to the total production of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. as a whole. "Toyota is suffering from personnel shortage and workers who don't have sufficient skills are increasing at its working places. It's like an army with diminishing logistics while engaging in a war," the reporter said. "It pursued cost down, and it cannot be denied the quality went down as a result. The employees of the company themselves are now saying they have to review what they have been doing," he added.

Every car is a huge assembly of moving parts, any one of which can break and cause a problem. When you consider how complicated a modern automobile is, it's kind of a small miracle that the thing even starts and runs in the morning.
Toyota had better be careful. A good reputation can easily be hurt by just a handful of bad experiences.

Well in spite of everything said I am here to testify as the original owner of a '96 4runner V6 with 190,000 trouble free miles. It's still on the original auto transmission, shocks, radiator and even the rear brake shoes are original. At one time these cars were built like indestructable tanks. However as with most thing with passing times they just don't make 'em like they used to. Toyota's quality manufacturing has drastically dived for some time. They are baliming it on shortage of qualified personnel. But the real fault is the management's greed.

Certainly sucks to be the the Japanese worker/"made in Japan" and the supposed flawless quality record. Other than the obvious field levelling comment, I'm always glad to see a company step up to the plate and do the right thing. There are no excuses for the Giant GM, nor for the littler companies if they hide or shirk from their engineering/assembly responsibilities. This is a conscientious move especially as huge as it is, and Toyota should be given a 'hurrah' for doing the right thing.

Toyota builds good product and so does GM!
When or if Toyota builds as many vehicles as GM, their recall rate will be close.
Recalls aren`t all that bad. I`d rather have the company eat the repair cost than have it come out of my wallet.
All mechanical things break I don`t care what you love or what you drive.
As far as styling (admitting its not what it use to be), I`d take a GM over Toyota and keep my money in this country as much as I can.
Our standard of living is sinking. Wonder why!

Tom Design you seem to be posting a strange comment. GM has had plenty of voluntary recalls, so to say, "good for toyota for doing a voluntary recall" and "shame of GM for having to do a voluntary recall" seems to show the board that YOU'RE A 1 SIDED UINFORMED MORON!

Oh Wow!
Something mechanical has to be recalled, I'm shocked. I ***never*** fault any company that ISSUES a recall.
I fault companies that would cover up an issue with the mechanicals in order to AVOID a recall.
Ironically, I own a Mitsubishi.

"12. 113,000 Prius, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13046349/"
Well, if there was any one current car I could give into a lot of recalls it would be the Prius. It is such new charted waters, hybrid cars. Even if were the Chevy Prius I would feel the same way.
I had a VW Jetta that had so many recalls, I went numb to them.

Umago => I'm sorry! What a garbled sentence I drivelled on and on. I will write out my complex sentence structures on a scrap piece of paper to make sure I type them better for final posting. I can see where you're confused. But for the record, I understand that large companies make more mistakes, so therefore, I can be called two sided, and sometimes three, but not one. And, on my being an uniformed moron, I have to draw a line, in the sand or wherever one of those lines gets drawn. I'm sure you meant uniformed, because I know many morons, none informed, as what else is a moron but uninformed? My uniform would be a mechanics' zippered worksuit, or something at a KFC.

"WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it is recalling nearly 1 million vehicles across the globe to replace faulty parts that could cause drivers to lose control of the steering wheel.
The recall affects about 986,000 vehicles across 10 models, including its popular Prius hybrid car. More than half of the affected vehicles are in Japan, company officials said.
The intermediate shafts and sliding yokes in the recalled cars lack the necessary strength and could distort or crack under strong pressure, causing drivers to lose control of the steering wheel, the Japanese automaker said in a statement."
Had the intermediate replaced in my Chevy Silverado.
See ones no better than another.
The Chevys would get sloppy.
I wonder how fourth comming Toyota would be if this weren`t a saftey issue?
It may be voluntary but how could it not be?
Watch honda stay small smart and profitible with good relibility.

Where's lithious' usual incoherant "buy American" rant?
I've got to once again point out that while Honda, Nissan, Mazda and yes, even domestics have maintained a low level or even reduced their recalls, Toyota's are SKYROCKETING. Where is the media attention on the "crumbling" of tToyota's invincible quality mystique?
Nissan caught hell (justified) in 2004, Ford in 2002-03 for quality gaffes, so where are the journalists crying for answers from Toyota?
