Video: Audi RS4 vs. BMW M3 CS
Here's a great video of the new Audi RS4 and the BMW M3 CS going head-to-head on the U.K.'s "Fifth Gear." It's over 12 minutes long, but there's lots of energetic sideways driving to make it worthwhile. Much more fun than the inevitable enthusiast magazine track comparison.

The RS4 seems to be a great product from Audi. I like its looks - it looks like a predator. I haven't seen one on the road yet (are they out in the US?), but I can't wait to run one and see how much they lead by.
As for comparing drifting - why? The drifting craze is effecting everyone, I hardly ever drift my M3 and never on purpose :)

These guys get paid to do this, huh? That's not fair.

I would still take the M3, but the coolest part of the video isn't the cars. Its the guys tearin' up the track in Business Casual clothes.
I don't know if it was the driver or the car but the Audi didn't come off looking great in the last test with the exception of being to pull away with power what it lacked in handling.

As far as I can tell... in the 70's there was a Japanese driver who used drifting after hitting the apex to help control his exit and it won him some championships. The fact that it was a showy complicated maneuver won him lots of fans.
Since then, it seems to have become the "it thing" to show off control of a car. I'd liken it to having a barrel-roll at the end of an airplane race: Doesn't help you go faster, but it sure looks cool!
Otherwise, it's called oversteer, and any sporty RWD car you buy that isn't made before 1995 will usually have all sorts of complicated systems to try and counteract it (although some of the more expensive marques will give you a little button to turn them off)

The M3 put up a decent fight winning 1 of the 3 so not a total blow out.
Wait until the new M3 arrives, then compare again. That will be a great showdown! I predict - an M3 victory!!

Wow, neither guy seems to take a good line in the corners. On the track i'm shocked how many people with far superior cars than mine simply can't keep up their speed in the corners. These guys would fit right in with many M3 owners - more machine than they can handle.
As for the RS4 - it's a pig. Look at the weight on that thing. Yikes.

Haha bgdc, do you even realize how stupid what you said was? Tiff Needell used to be a pro racing driver. He test drove F1 cars and raced in Le Mans. Jason Plato still races in the BTCC.

Not sure of your qualifications and/or experience to make question their driving lines since Tiff Neddell is a ex F1 driver known worldwide for his car control and Jason Plato is a multiple touring car champion who was in charge of driver development for a major touring car team over here.
I think you should watch the video again, you may learn something for when you are on the track "racing" against machinery you can't afford.

Tiff Whomever and Jason Socrates may have won a billion races, the fact is, the footage they use in that lame "report" shows them entering corners in a sloppy fashion. Perhaps the editors picked the shots that look the most 'exciting' but watching the footage one would assume those two talking head bozos couldn't pilot a ford festiva around a parking lot without getting serious nosedive.
BTW, the M3 is not an expensive car. You can pick up a used 02 M3 for sub-30k. New ones are still a relative bargain at 49k - not including all the discounts BMWCCA is sending out to lure people into buying an 06.

They do not seem as fun as the guys from Top Gear.

And bgdc - how many times have you lapped Anglesey? Tiff and Plato, hundreds if not thousands of times.
You might be right that the "action shots" were filmed for television, but to knock the drivers...I guess you haven't really seen the actual show.
I admit though, that Top Gear is still more fun to watch even though none of the hosts are racing drivers like on Fifth Gear.

All Tiff does is showboat, his reviews have always been like that. Sure he may be an ex-F1 driver (wasn't a winner though), but bgdc is right in seeing that he's not really using any car control in that review. It's all flash. Same goes for Jason.
Anyone else notice that those cocksters called it an M3 CS when it's really a CSL? Sloppy sloppy...just like their driving.

Actually the car is a M3 CS, not CSL... maybe you should check your facts...
