Decision on SMART coming in June
DaimlerChrysler is still deciding whether or not to bring the brand to the U.S. and a recent Forbes article quotes Klaus Maier, head of sales and marketing at Mercedes Car Group, as saying, "I expect that we will make a final decision in June." Meanwhile, Zap began importing SMART cars in the U.S. back in March. So, do you think that billboard from South Africa will play in Peoria?

It would work well in the congested cities like LA and NY. They sell well up here in Canada, and seem to hold resale value.

Bring the forFour over to the 'States, and do it for less than $10g's. If it's the zippy econocar it affirms itself as, it'll have a few takers.

oh please don't. we have enough ugly cars from japan. ie. element, xb, tundra, tacoma, scion, kia, and now yaris. just bring in one. an idiot lawyer like "finished law school" would probably love it. especially the pink one.

...just like they said they were going to decide in December of 2005. That date came and went without so much as a peep from DCX.
This is just more "stalin" (har har) from the german execs.

It may be "un-American" of me to say, but I'd buy one of these as a commuter

I realize this may sound crazy but I saw one of these in car camo about a month ago here in Omaha.
Maybe they were testing for true highway miles and driving across the great plains!

I'd buy a *real* one in a hurry, given a reasonable price. I've been interested in YEARS, but gave up on ZAP (theirs can't be sold in California, which is fucked up.)

#6 - The Smart is undergoing a mild redesign for 2007 or 08. It is suspected that is the version we will get in America. Maybe they were testing the new model here in the US. Otherwise, there is no reason to Camo a Smart car. Zap has many running around the streets already...and they have been in Canada for awhile now.

It will certainly play well in San Fransisco.

Who gives a F*ck!
They can't even make up their minds. By the time they do Smartcars will be Dumbcars.

Psst...the Smart car is German, not Japanese.
"This is just more "stalin" (har har) from the german execs."
Psst...Stalin was Russian, not German. This would be akin to mocking Toyota for "Lincoln" something together.

Just add a couple of blades and you are ready to cut the grass in style...oh, better get a green one.

The basic problem with the Smart is that it is too expensive. Priced at $10K-$12K it would kind of make sense. Priced as it is ($16K and up), there are lots of other cars that make more sense.

Doogs... could be worth pointing out that Kia aren't Japanese, either.
Oh, and the Smart is German/Swiss, to be accurate.

I would love it if lots of men bought one and saved gas, road rage, wear and tear on highways/infrastructure, the air quality, and traffic congestion. Meanwhile, I could never see my over 6' frame at 175lbs and my size 12 feet emerging from this vehicle in public. I might enjoy driving one at the country farm, or at the Smart car club rally, like an amusement park. But, I just don't have any positive emotion towards this other than, it's cute for you. And car purchasers are emotional when they buy, if the salesman and the merchandise are any good, it's the "feel" that makes you buy. I have more of a negative "feel" than even a neutral, or zero feeling towards this design.

you know all the press about scooters becoming suddenly a hot market? i have reservations because of the winters here in chicago. a smart for under 10,000 would be a nice trade off.

Actually, while Smart itself is German / Swiss, the ForFour is manufactured in Amsterdam by Mitsubishi (it shares the underpinnings of a Colt).

#14 -- I agree. For 10k-12k a fortwo would definietly be worth considering, as it would be competing with the Toyota Yaris liftback and sedan. For 16k or more I wouldn't consider it at all.
It's a great car and all, but with the Yaris liftback I get two more seats for about $10k (base price).
There are much better options, even though I enjoy the odd stance and presence a smart car has. They were all over Germany/Switzerland.
