Autobild opens up on 2010 Mercedes 300SL gullwing

After having its cover pimped out all over the internet on account of this mouth watering rendering, German mag Autobild has finally posted what it knows about a possible resurrection of the Mercedes-Benz 300SL gullwing. The boys and girls at AMG, not Mercedes proper, are likely doing development and production of the vehicle, which will likely be powered by a 6.3L biturbo V8 developing 750 hp. A seven-speed double clutch transmission, aluminum skin and perfect 50:50 weight distribution are all part of this automotive revival due out sometime around 2010.
Oh, and that rendering, pure speculation on the part of Autobild's artists, but oh what an imagination those Germans have!

I will honestly mortgage my first born for this car, if it does end up in production form.

Where will the Mclaren SLR be in 2010? Maybe 1000+ horsepower? I sure hope Mercedes is going to be putting all wheel drive on their top end cars from now on, traction is getting to be too much of a problem for these high torque engines.

Ohh Boy, another $300,000+ car. Just what the world needs eh?
Luckily, Diamler/Chrysler is doing allot of research into alternative fuels and the like. Otherwise, you would have to wonder if they are slipping back to the 20's and 30's when only the most wealthy could afford a Benz.
That being said, they could not get hurt to much using the speculative design shown above.

This is only about 100 times more attractive than the fugly rolling phallic symbol that currently serves as the Benz standard bearer.

The idea's probably the best MB's had in a while... hope it doesn't look like the Saturn Sky/Opel GT roadster knock off like the one above (with gw doors...)

Looks like a gullwing Saturn Sky.

#2 - what are you talking about? Why would you need AWD? F1 and NASCAR rigs surely do well without them.

This might be a pretty exciting car if they could keep the price range reasonable. Unfortunately it'll likely end up being a big buck exotic.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about the power of this machine? I'd be happy with 300 horses and good handling.

Another Mercedes supercar with just 8 cylinders - no matter how "beautiful" they make it, what's the wager that it, too, will be a certain flop like the current V8 SLR?

The use of a V8 in this 300SL revival, especially a 6.3 litre powerplant is nostalgic, as that is the same displacement as the engine which powered the 300SEL 6.3. However, I would like to see Mercedes REALLY return to the roots of the gullwing by using a relatively small displacement inline six with gobs of NA power. Back in 1954, a 3000CC inline six with 200HP was quite a technological tour de force. I'd like to see what the boys at AMG/Mercedes-Benz could do with an inline six again.

I'm with #8. How about making this the "New" slk55 with a 355 hp engine and pricing it at about 70 grand? This is without a doubt the prettiest car design of the past 50 years, and sadly it was designed about 50 years ago! Put this within 10 grand of a porsche cayman and it's over:)

So we're still young boys... I remember in St-Tropez in '60 years the Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing... 'The' Dream Car! Now it's a great pleasure to see the new one. Congratulations!
