Hyundai Motor America's all-new 2007 Entourage (shown above) has garnered the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's gold "Top Safety Pick" award, with the best rating ever for a minivan. The Entourage is also the first Hyundai to receive an IIHS "gold" award.

The Entourage includes six standard airbags, including side-curtains for all three rows and torso-protecting side air bags. The minivan also includes Electronic Stability Control as standard. Hyundai says that by the end of this year, standard ESC will be included on 70 percent of its vehicles sold, which it is quick to point out is a record for a non-luxury brand.

Wow! I am really impressed with both the Kia Sedona and the Hyundai Entourage. Assuming the quality will really sustain itself beyond the new car phase, I can't imagine how any other van, including Toyota and Honda, can compete. I am concerned about the actual gas mileage. On the Kia web site it states 244 HP with premium fuel required. For Hyundai they claim 242 HP but make no mention of premium fuel. I wonder what the story is here?

I think they were done on separate press releases and this one is making the rounds just now. The IIHS website shows information for the Sedona, but not the Entourage just yet, and there was a Dateline NBC episode this past Sunday that highlighted the Kia Sedona's good test ratings, so I think it already got its press. The Entourage press release came out just yesterday I believe, so since it's fresh, it's probably making the rounds now and getting the attention.

The couple in the pic, parked in front of a five-star looking hotel are probably thinking "get me the hell away from this minivan, QUICK) :-)

Hyundai is built in Montgomery, Alabama. The factory is making very good cars.

In accepting the award Hyundai's chairman said, "If you're all through with that cornbread, could you pass it through the bars for me?"

I'm glad that hyundai did get this award but it kind of amazes me at how Hyundai gets all of the press and ooos and aaas while Kia doesn't really get anything. The Kia Sedona got the award, but the post indicates that Hyundai earned the award. I know that the Entourage and Sedaona are the same vehciles, but don't you think the headline should read "Sedona wins Top Safety Pick Award?" But, Hyundai is doing a good job and I hope they keep up the good work.

Two common differences between Kia and Hyundai vehicles:

      1. Kia suspension tuning is usually firmer, for significantly better handling

      2. Kia usually offers a black interior in addition to tan and/or gray, while Hyundai offers just tan and gray

For both of these reasons I tend to prefer Kias. The new Sedona does have the best handling of any large minivan. I suspect Hyundai will muck this up for the Entourage.
