If you're tired of walking and really don't
want to risk a heart attack in one of the Big Apple's (in)famous taxi cabs--assuming you can hail one--Segway is
offering an alternative.
Segways, those two-wheel motorized vehicles, will be available for demonstration
at the show. The linked article cites the benefits of a Segway such as low maintenance and operating costs. Did you
know it only costs 10 cents to fully charge the electric battery, which means the Segway provides 390 miles of
operation for the cost of a single gallon of gas. Its tires have a 5,000 miles range. It also has an electronic key
start so no one can steal your Segway from the bike rack.
Other advantages and contact information
while in NYC can be found at the link.

Fat asses around the world jump for joy.
JG @ Apr 12th 2006 6:01PM
yeah, because that guy REALLY needs something to cart his fat ass from point A to point B. That little bit of walking between his bed and the refrigerator was the only exercise he probably gets on a day to day basis and now it's been taken away. Congratulations Segway, you've just managed to massively increase the obesity population in America.
samuel @ Apr 12th 2006 6:10PM
The Segway may have low running costs, but it is important to factor in emergency room treatment costs for all the beatings you'll get for being seen on one.
Presto @ Apr 12th 2006 6:15PM
Nice job Samuel (#3). Is it me or is anyone else thinking about how fat this planet is getting and whether or not the planet will get thrown off it's axis at some point due to the fat asses on America's soil? Forget global warming, the Segway will end the world as we know it.

I wonder if the same kind of comments were said when the AUTOMOBILE first came out?
samuel @ Apr 12th 2006 6:41PM
Hey, #5, the automobile was largely a replacement for the horse and buggy. The Segway is a replacement for walking. Big difference.
Jon @ Apr 12th 2006 6:54PM
True #6 I was thinking the same thing but I am sick of the one track minds here. Maybe this guy has some kind of health problem were walking can be a challenge. Maybe this could be a great replacement for the wheelchair when standing can be permitted. Or maybe this will just make people fat and lazy and medical doctors and companies can get rich off us for the huge medical bills they can charge.
Vinny @ Apr 12th 2006 7:21PM
Or maybe he got so fed up with his Hummer being in the shop all the time, filling it with gas everyday and crying when looking at how fast it's depreciating and decided one day that a Segway was a way better value over that rebadged Tahoe called an H2.
iQuack @ Apr 12th 2006 7:21PM
That lard-ass pictured should do his heart a favor and walk around the show unless he has a specific health problem.
Too many people eat grease and salt, then sit around while pendulous rolls of fat grow on them. Phooey!
Best to take a 30 minute minimum brisk walk daily if you can.
John B @ Apr 12th 2006 7:30PM
The Segway - the functionality of a bicycle at 10 times the price. With no exercise thrown in for good measure. Interesting technology though.
samuel @ Apr 12th 2006 7:34PM
#7, yeah, he's got a health problem where walking is a challenge. It's called "I'm so fat that my legs break whenever I walk."
#8, yeah, I can just see it now, lines of used Hummers traded in for Segways at the local Brokeback Mountain Segway dealership.
jayray @ Apr 12th 2006 7:46PM
Maybe this guy is load testing the SEG.
Maybe he found it and was caught in the process of stealing it.
Maybe he used to weigh 560 pounds.
Jonathan Gleich @ Apr 12th 2006 8:18PM
Umm folks, The segway is NOT a lazy man's tool. It is far harder to stand on a moving platform and balence then you people think. YES it gets you around faster, and it IS expensive but How many here have actually ever RIDDEN one? -- Please people who HAVE post something negative... anyone? Anyone? Buller? Buller? fry? Fry??

One thing I don't understand about the Segway -- is it really comfortable to stand for a realy long time?
My feet start aching if I'm just standing around. It feels better to be walking and moving my feet.
Bob Allan @ Apr 12th 2006 8:33PM
Don't look at the Segway as a replacement for walking or a bike, look at it as an alterntive to a car. I live 5 miles from work, and don't have the option of riding a bike and showering. This machine, could in theory allow me to leave my car (24mpg) in the driveway, which means one less vehicle on the road, and a saving of $10.00 day in parking fees - not bad in my book!
WillDaThrill @ Apr 12th 2006 8:42PM
I think the point people are trying to make here is that we don't need another convenience. Sure technology is great, but people are getting lazy enough. Is it that much to ask for people to walk anymore? 60% of the time people get hoverounds and stuff because they're fat lazy asses who wonder why their legs hurt when they walk or why they get tired when the walk a hundred yards. It's because of that quarter ton of wieght you're carrying. The sad thing is that most obesity problems start so young in age in which usually isn't the kids fault.
Nick @ Apr 12th 2006 8:58PM
#13---well i dont think your right about how hard it is to balance. especially since the segway is doing the work for you.
i personally will be at the show friday and wanna try one out. that would be fun.
Damon @ Apr 12th 2006 9:02PM
As much as I'm enjoy such witty banter, does anyone know this guy's name. I think he writes for Car & Driver or Automobile. Anyone?
empire @ Apr 12th 2006 9:25PM
Any of you hypocritical lazy whiners ever take an elevator??? Did you know that for every elevator, there is a staircase nearby, yet you still use the elevator??! The Segway serves the same purpose as an elevator...it is a power tool that moves a person from A to B quickly and efficiently. It replaces DRIVING...instead of using your single occupant SUV to go 3 miles. No parking, no fumes, no fossil fuels. Lots more exercise involved using a Segway than sitting in your stinking car. Americans are obese becasue they stuff themselves on supersize value meals, then sit motionless in a car/truck/SUV to travel a mile or two to work, NOT because they use a Segway.
Jacob @ Apr 12th 2006 9:53PM
Most of you guys have no idea what you're talking about and I'm guessing most have not been on a Segway, much less ever seen one. A Segway is not a replacement for exercise, nor a replacement for walking, because it can move significantly faster than walking, taking people greater distances in shorter periods of time. It really isn't a difficult concept, or hard to understand where the Segway can fit in to the scheme of transportation options. You may want to actually try one, before opening your yappers. America, by the way, is getting fat primarily because of an increase fast food habits, accompanied by a general lack of exercise. Eliminate or reduce fast food, and then we'll have a solution for obesity. Trying to blame the Segway is ridiculous. Just because this rider happens to appear a little heavy, and we don't know exactly why he is using a Segway, does not mean that most riders are heavy. Most riders I've seen have been rather fit looking. The fact is that driving a car around is the most "lazy" form of transportation available—-more so than walking, biking, and certainly the Segway! My suggestion is that people try to get out of their cars for shorter trips, and use whatever else is available. Try walking, biking, and the Segway for short to moderate commutes. I bet in the end, the mode that will win you over is the Segway. Of course, if all you can afford is a skateboard, you may have to stick with what you have, or hop on the nearest bus. I think Segways are awesome, and look forward to new developments from Segway and other innovative, cutting edge companies. The rest of you can enjoy paying $3.00+ per gallon for gas this summer, while polluting the environment, wasting resources, increasing global warming, supporting fossil fuel dependencies, funding oil rich nations, and contributing to our need to spend billions of dollars of tax money to engage in military action in the Middle East, all while sitting on your ignorant, lazy asses in your cars and SUVs.
