"Badge engineering" isn't good when they're putting Cadillac badges on Pontiacs, but it's o.k. when they're putting Acrua badges on cars that otherwise wouldn't be sold here (TSX=Euro Accord).

That's what I think is happening here, and I'm thrilled to see it. I prefer the European philosophy on driving (direct steering, firm and controlled suspension, good control rationality, good economy, etc.) but we're continually told that they can't afford to bring in the Euro variants, or that we're too stupid to enjoy them.

GM must have figured that they had the Saturn brand laying around rotting and a bunch of cars in Europe that aren't quite like anything sold here. Their solution is to bring a line of cars we'd never normally see to market. Excellent!

Too bad the cars are some of the worst in Europe. Oh well, no scenario is perfect, even for GM, but it's a start.

Jon Lind

Comments on Saturn previews Sky Red Line ahead of New York debut

#2 I saw three of them yesterday. The VUE is pretty good as it is now.

Could be that Lutz's efforts will pay off. It's likely that if Lutz had been at GM at the time, the Saturn LS and the ION horrors would never have been introduced in the first place because they're such obvious styling losers.

iQuack

Comments on Saturn previews Sky Red Line ahead of New York debut

That grille reminds me of the new civic sedan--but it's a positive step for GM. Interior and exterior looks pretty nice. Too bad Saturn dealers will trash their once-cushy rep of not being punks and doing dealer markups. They just need a classy sedan and something a whole lot better than the Ion.

I think Saturn = Opel would be the best strategy for GM. Bring out Euro cars here so that they don't need to resort to wretched Badgineering.
