Viewers of Sunday's edition of CBS' "60 Minutes" news program were treated to a short clip about GM's "Push for Better Design," in which none other than the designmeister himself, Bob Lutz, gave a carefully orchestrated peak at the Cadillac model shown in the accompanying screenshot. (The full video is here.)
What is it? We haven't a clue. Autoblog tipster IngenRa thinks its the next CTS - check out the video and tell us what you think.

Yeah I saw that show. Looked like every other cadillac out there.

That beauty is a coupe. Let's call it the Eldorado for now.

I like the cleaning up of the exterior, but the new CTS NEEDS a nicer interior. Hard plastic just DOES NOT cut it in a car that competes with the BMW 3-series. The interior in the STS should be a benchmark for GM, as I think it's the nicest interior the domestics have ever built, and it looks better than some imports (in that segment). The outside looks great, more detailed, and sharper. They really need to differentiate the CTS and STS more, both look too forgettable. I think this Lutz guy just may be getting it.

The front may look like other caddy's but the rear deck lid was very high, never seen that in that line. I think it is the next CTS as well and look forward to seeing it. I believe we will see it at the NY show. All I know is everyone who as seen the new CTS says it is amazing, will see if that is true but from those quick glimpses I am hopeful....all I want is an interior upgrade.

Peter DeLorenzo has seen the next Cadillac CTS and says it's a knockout. If the peek at the Cadillac on 60 Minutes is the new CTS, he is right.

"carefully orchestrated peak at the Cadillac" PEAK??? Doesn't AOL have any profreaders? The word is peek.

I like what I can see of this car. I was watching Autoline Detriot and they said a few months ago that they got a sneak peak at the new CTS. They said it was the most beautful car they had ever seen. They said the next Malibu was really good looking too. They also said it goes to show how stupid GM is, they have a building full of beautiful cars and look what they have on the road.
Cadillac seems to be the only GM brand that know what they want to be when they grow up.

There was an article a month or so ago that indicated the next CTS and STS will challenge Lexus on interior luxury. If the exterior is going to change this dramatically, we can only hope the interior will too.

I like the chromed ribs in the lovely horizontal curves of the grille, flowing into the bumper crease line. However, this is leaning towards the Art Deco look just a bit, ornamentation for it's own sake, rather than the holding to the crisp, cutting edge look that started Cadillac's design revival in the late '90's. Hope they don't go overboard with wings and halos.

The interior will be much better than the current CTS. I've been to a few clinics where I have seen this front end and variations upon it. The interior departs from the protruding edge look, and moves towards more a more flowing design. This has been in the works for at least 2 years.

Am i the only one who doesnt see the CTS in the same segment as the 3 series? Its too big. The size of the European BLS more suitable for a 3-series fighter.
Le Penseur Roule @ Apr 4th 2006 11:03AM
If you had watched the entire clip, you'd find that they also showed that sneak peak from the side, and also showed the interior buck, as well.
Looks gorgeous.
CHris @ Apr 4th 2006 11:05AM
Kind of has that Audi wide mouth grille with the bumper passing through it.
jamie @ Apr 4th 2006 11:16AM
Cadillac 16 ???
Gee willikers, I hope so. Caddy needs to move more upscale to get into the Maybach range.
Jason @ Apr 4th 2006 11:54AM
Perhaps its just me, but the best part of that segment was the words (paraphrasing) "design lead and the bean counters followed" and "product, product, product". I think we all had "its the product stupid" hotkeyed for too long. Its great that GM is getting its head out of the sand.
The quick glance of the interior mock-up looked great too.
So GM, replace my Infiniti!

Looks good. I wish they'd transfered more from the Imaj concept to their current production cars. Seems GM felt the general public wouldn't be ready for that car's rear end till 2008.
The interior looks good, and Lutz has done impressive work with the fits inside the new DTS and Lucerne.
The story talks a lot about rewriting agreements from decades ago that were too generous with pensions.
Are they also going to rewrite agreements with retired executives? They'd have more grounds there, as those execs' bonuses were based on seriously overstated earnings, earnings that should have reflected the true, long-term cost of labor. But this will never happen.
CM @ Apr 4th 2006 12:26PM
Lutz is such a tease...from the spy pics of the '08 CTS I've seen, that was what they showed us on 60 minutes. And I like it.
RossL @ Apr 4th 2006 12:44PM
Yessiree - a flashy new Caddy is all GM needs to return to profitability and chase the Japanese from our shores. Meh.
Actually, it looks like the ultimate pimpmobile.
DJ @ Apr 4th 2006 1:17PM
OK, we know that's a CTS that he pulls the drape off of. Is that the new SRX behind him? I would LOVE to see the SRX with that new grille and interior!
Aki @ Apr 4th 2006 1:41PM
I've thought GM/Cadillac designs sucked since... well as far as I can remember.
That being said, the front end of that car is gorgeous. Beefier, sharper contours than the current CTS (hope that's the CTS). That interior mockup is also quite original and beautiful. That might be the first Cadillac that looks stunning in decades.
Here's hoping that things have really changed for GM. By the looks of that video though, is that a coupe?
