Jaguar's next X-Type a "shooting brake"?
Jaguar badly needs a successful replacement for
the current lackluster X-Type model, but it can't quite make up its mind on a design direction for its entry-level
luxury car. Automotive News reports that a front-running option may well be an all-wheel drive "shooting
brake," or luxury station wagon. We think a Jag shooting brake could be a big hit, and we've included the picture of an XK-150 shooting brake in hopes that it might jump-start Jaguar's design team. Just trying to help.
Whatever the company decides, it had better move quickly - 2005 production of the current X-Type fell 25 percent from the previous year, to 44,965 units.

I don't like station wagons - at all - but even I'd take a look at something that looked like this. *wow*

How about a real transmission in the US? I own an 68 E-Type OTS and would happily buy a new Jag if I could get one with a manual tranny. At the very least, they should get rid of the much-reviled j-gate. I'd pick up an X-Type right now if it came in stick.

No, Jag doesn't need a shooting brake as a entry level. The wagon on the X-type didn't even sell that well.
They should use C-1 platform maybe extend it a little to give it more size since the replacement for the future S40 will be growing in size as well off the same platform.
I actually like the X-type ( would never buy one ) but I like the design.

What Jag really needs is a Miata fighter. A car this size will have great appeal for those who were too young or not around to have bought such a car when it was popular in the 70's. Older folks would also love such a car and see its heritage reborn. In other words, such a car would have mass appeal for just about everyone.
Since Mazda is part of the Ford family like Jaguar perhaps they can borrow some Miata engineers to make it agile, economical and reliable but different enough to make it a true JAGUAR. Lets not forget to make it in Britian.

Jag tried the low end with the X-Type. A low-end British car is more along the lines of MG or Triumph.
Jag had the F-Type... priced to sell against the Boxster/SLK. Shoulda used that X-Type development money to get the F going.
If Jag can build the XJ220, they could have built the F.

I agree. The F would have sold like hot cakes. But the money was reallocated to diesel engines.
The X-Type wagon does sell well in Europe though.

A shooting brake is more like a station wagon. In fact it's just an old-fashioned term from a time when people who went hunting wanted a vehicle where they could stand up in the back and shoot at stuff. Nowadays the Brits call a station wagon an 'estate car' or 'estate'.

Technically it's a 3-door version of what the 'station-wagon', not to be confused with the 'hatch-back', although similar.

Jaguar shouldn't have an entry level car. That is so un-Jaguar. Let Jaguar retire the X-Type forever. Also, please bring back the previos generation XJ. The latest XJ looks like a Buick or Oldsmobile. What happened? Who made that decision? They need to be fired!

Not that anybody cares at this point, but it makes me happy to know (and thankful for Firefox)!

Didn't SNL/Robert Smigel's "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" drive something similar to this?

I don't know about shooting brakes, but the Jaguar X type has NO brakes in an emergency. This has happened 4 times. The last failure caused a rear-end collision and the 3 before caused me to slide underneath a red light. Caution in purchasing this car for safety reasons.

I purchased a 2003 X-Type 2.5, and liked it well enough to purchase a 2005 X-Type wagon when that model was introduced. Both cars are pleasant look at and to drive, well-equipped, and comfortable for their size. The 2.5 engine is not a sizzling performer, but it is easy on fuel (27-28 mpg on highway). If Jaguar comes out with a similar successor car, I would certainly consider purchasing one.

I just purchased a nicely equipped 2003 2.5 x type and I really like it. The stick shift adds a little pep to the 2.5, gas mileage is good and the car is comfortable as well as fun to drive.Navigation system is excellent. I have not had the brake trouble that Jennifer describes. What I would wish for is different gearing (fifth is useless). Otherwise it's a fine little car.
