Hummer's Wrangler-fighter appears back in the mix
Badge-engineering watchdogs, beware, but don't complain too much, because General Motors believes there's
more than a few consumers queuing for a Hummer H4. The Jeep Wrangler-fighting project that General Motors had been
working on was originally tabled because a "clean sheet approach" employing unique space frame technology
was deemed too costly to justify. The project is evidently back on, according to GM's Bob Lutz, albeit minus the
"clean sheet." Regardless, The Golden Gut is out to assure that the H4 will be a unique
proposition.
All of which begs the question-- what platform will the H4 be sharing?

They should have built this instead of the H3 or at least before the H3. Then again you would have a gap between H4 and H2 plus the odd numbered H1 would be out of sequence. For platforms they could use a shortened version of the Trailblazer/Envoy/H2. Isn't that what the stupid SSR is built on?

Kappa? Maybe the Solstice is so heavy because they wanted to be able to use the platform in off-road applications?
I'm pretty sure I'm just joking. But a Hummer using the Delta or Theta platform just doesn't seem right. I know the LR Freelander is based off of a front-drive platform with a transverse engine, but it still doesn't seem right.

If anything, it will probably share the Theta platform(equinox, torrent, Vue) but heavily revised to give it good off-roading capabilities much like what GM did with the Colorado/Canyon platform and the H3 and to a lesser extent with the H2 and the GMT-800 (tahoe/yukon) platform.
Though, Theta is a crossover platform so it may harder to do it.
Another possiblity is a shortened mid-size Body-on-frame platform.

It would be a cool vehichle. Especially if it cost less than $20k.

Am I the only one seeing a strong resemblance to the old IH Scout's? Just picture...oh...a 1976 scout II with it's top down.

Could utilize a well modifyed version of the Vitara chassis (unsure as to what platform that is) It at least has a longitudional powertrain, manual and auto transmissions, and a 2speed transfer case. It's already in production as a short w/b model for the rest of the world.

*None* of Hummer's current models use a "clean-sheet" approach(H1=HUMVEE,H2=Suburban,H3=Canyon/Colorado) so why did that give them pause this time around?

General Motor's "Wrangler fighter"?? Why not bring back the K5 Blazer in this slot?? Just don't make the mistake of weaking it like Ford has done to their retro Bronco concept based off a compact car...jeez!
I think GM could hit a homerun if they did revive the old K5. It was a handsome looking truck and pretty darn formidable off-road. Just give it a good V-8, strong looks but clean lines like the original, 32" tires (minimum) and solid axles all around - Dana 60 in back, Dana 45 up front, driver controlled locking differentials, and of course the removable hardtop.
GM would really have a kick@$$ truck in the Chevy lineup for a change

Don't confuse badge engineering with platform re-use. The term "badge engineering" really should apply to cross brand vehicle sharing. There are good and bad reasons to do it. Such as Toyota-Lexus. A Toyota is rebadged in North America to be "Lexus". Pontiac G5 rebadged Chevy Cobalt-Bad rebadge.
Sharing a platform such as the H3 with the Canyon or the RX330 with the camry. Audi TT and the Golf. That's an entirely different thing. No company would be able to do unique architectures for each vehicle. It would be plain stupid. All of the testing, design , tooling would be duplicated, tripled, etc.

Something tells me our guesses are off. Or GM is insane. This thing is not going to be a "Wrangler-fighter" if it has the underpinnings of a Pontiac Torrent. The Equinox/Vue/Torrent is just about the least off-road capable SUV on Earth, and I'm not sure any amount of "beefing up" could make this thing competition for the best off-road vehicle on the market.

Give Hummer a chance. I dont think anyone can doubt the off-road capabilities of theses trucks compared to other suv's. GM has yet to break Hummer's focus; which is to make out of the factory capable off-road vehicles. I wish the same could be said of Jeep. (Compass?)

something on the Grand Vitara platform could be workable given it'S the smaller SUV in the GM family that's not on a sedan platform..... of course we have to hope they won't cut corners like they did with the H3...so many things to change on that one...

The best Hummer was the one they never put in production - the H3T Concept vehicle - The H3 by comparison was a sad and ugly generic SUV. And this H4 looks about as unimaginative as the H3 & H2. Hummer started off great with the H1, after that it has been all downhill.

This "concept" ,if built, would be a shot in the arm for GM/Hummer. Only if done right. Marketing will be a huge factor, but princing will be the key factor. Eventhough the H3 is the cheapest price of the Hummer's, it's still in the 30k's. Marketing it to the people who would buy a Wrangler will be hard, but doable, since most Jeepers are so loyal. Make this H4 for the "Week-end Warriors", the people who want something to take off in the woods and don't really care if it gets dirty. Unlike most of the people who own H2's & H3's. If GM would base this on the reg. cab Colorado/Canyon platform, 2 door w/ optional removable top, & the I-5 would work better in this set-up since it's lighter. If not, hell use the straight 6, since that's what should have went in the H3. It would definatly work well in that reg. cab length platform, & should be used in the trucks too.(Excuse me I got sidetracked.) Pricing is going to be the KEY factor here. Start it off @ $20k & loaded for around $27k & GM/Hummer couldn't make them fast enough. That is only if they stay true to the Hummer Off-Roadablity & don't church it up too much. Besides, if you think about it, EVERYBODY WANTS A HUMMER.
