The Geneva Motor Show is underway and Saab has taken aim and struck first by unveiling its Aero X Concept. The two-seater coupe expresses Saab’s future design language, one obviously more aggressive than the current.
The Aero X also draws from the Scandinavian automaker’s aviation roots by featuring a cockpit canopy like a fighter jet that lifts up the “doors” and windshield together. Since there are no windshield pillars, the driver enjoys a full 180-degree view of the road ahead.
Power for the Aero X is provided by an environmentally conscious yet extremely powerful twin-turbo BioPower V6 engine that uses 100-percent ethanol and produces 400 hp.
As the name suggests, the Aero X is all-wheel drive and skinned entirely in carbon fiber, both of which contribute to a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds.
The interior is supposedly trick as well, the designers having eschewed all buttons and knobs for smooth acrylic ‘clear zones’ that present controls in graphic 3D images. Unfortunately GM hasn’t released any shots of the interior, so we’ll have to wait until our man on the floor, Alberto, produces some for us.

Aero X Concept Showcases Future Saab Design Direction
World premiere at Geneva Auto Show
- Inspired by Saab's aviation heritage and Scandinavian roots
- Previews more progressive design language
- Innovative opening canopy eliminates doors and windshield pillars
- "Green Power" from 400 hp BioPower engine using 100 percent ethanol fuel
- All-wheel drive, carbon fiber bodywork
- North American debut at New York auto show in April
The Saab Aero X concept harnesses the power of Saab's aviation and Scandinavian roots to make a unique statement in performance car design. Conceived as a study to explore future design directions, its innovative features preview the development of an enhanced design language that will inspire future Saab products.
As one would expect from Saab, this dynamic two-seater sports coupe breaks with automotive design convention both outside and inside.
First, there are no doors...or windshield pillars. That's because the Saab Aero X adopts a cockpit canopy, just as you would see on a jet aircraft. It offers the Aero X pilot full 180 degree vision, and also facilitates entry and exit from its low-slung cabin.
Thrust for the all-wheel-drive Saab Aero X also comes from a powerplant with a difference. The 400-hp, twin-turbo, BioPower V6 engine is fueled entirely by ethanol, a sustainable energy source that is kinder to the environment by cutting fossil CO2 emissions. The "green power" of this advanced engine gives new meaning to the phrase "performance with responsibility."
Inside, the Saab Aero X's cockpit also adds a new dimension to clean Scandinavian interior design by completely eliminating conventional dials and buttons. Instead, Saab has applied techniques derived from Swedish glass and precision instrument making, displaying data on glass-like acrylic 'clear zones' in graphic 3-D images.
All exterior and interior lighting is by LED (light-emitting diode), which has given the design team new freedom to exploit the compact packaging benefits of a technology that will be featured increasingly in future Saab products.
With weight-saving carbon fiber bodywork, a lightweight powertrain, electronically controlled suspension and all-wheel drive, the Saab Aero X is an exciting driver's car that promises a level of performance to match its looks. Computer simulations anticipate zero to 60mph/100 kph in just 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph/250 kph (limited).
Despite being so tightly driver-focused, the Aero X still offers surprising practicality, again, a quality you would expect to find in all Saab designs. That dramatically sculpted tail conceals a useful twin storage facility, with a conventional hatch opening and sliding drawer underneath.
"This study shows how the strength of the Saab brand heritage can inspire bold, innovative design," says Bryan Nesbitt, Executive Director, GM Design Europe. "As we move forward with new Saab products, we will remain focused on carefully cultivating this brand equity in the context of Scandinavian design values."
"This concept shows the exciting possibilities that are open to us as we evolve a more progressive design language for the brand," says Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile's Managing Director. "Our designers, engineers and marketers in Sweden are ideally placed to nurture and communicate the unique DNA of the Saab brand. Their work will ensure that future product proposals express core qualities, such as progressive design, sporty performance and emotional functionality, in a way that is specific to Saab."
The Saab Aero X is the latest in a series of concepts from Saab, each accentuating different brand qualities. These include the 'four-dimensional' 9X (IAA Frankfurt 2001), the 9-3X Cross-over Coupe (Detroit 2002) and the 9-3 Sport Hatch (IAA Frankfurt 2003).

try getting into that while its raining...

Who ever said Saab was worthless??? Find him, drag him into the street and shot the bastard! Saab needs to come out with more concepts like this! GOD I hope their new designs reflect a lot of this prototype.
Jonathan @ Feb 28th 2006 12:58AM
FINALLY something inspirational from Saab!
John @ Feb 28th 2006 1:14AM
Great Concept! HOT-HOT! Something no one else has come up with, very original. Now they just need to redesign the rear a bit so it doesn't look too much like to Chrysler Firepower. Good jod SAAB.
franz @ Feb 28th 2006 2:27AM
That's really a nice one.
Will Saab make serias car's like that?
Hope so...
G @ Feb 28th 2006 2:45AM
A car without A-pillars would be SOOO nice.
Mike @ Feb 28th 2006 3:32AM
Yeah, it's neat, but (a) what is even remotely Saab-like about it? and (b) what are the odds that anything even vaguely resembling this will ever be produced? I'm thinking not much and not much.
Lee @ Feb 28th 2006 3:34AM
It's very nice... but very late in the game. What do we have to look forward to by the time something like the AeroX makes it into production in 2015?
Jay S @ Feb 28th 2006 4:45AM
No, this trick version will never make production but I can easily see these lines grafted onto GM's Kappa platform (Solstice, Sky and that Opel roadster.)
thatguy @ Feb 28th 2006 5:49AM
Wow GM managed to mix the Chrysler firepower concept with a saturn sky, big deal.
Car-la @ Feb 28th 2006 6:20AM
Very nice. Unfortunately, it will never be built.
I'd rather had a concept of this kind that was close to production. With doors, and without the canopy. Then at least, one could hope that this would be built some day.
Edsel @ Feb 28th 2006 8:32AM
Perhaps Saab will re-introduce the Sonnet name. I agree with Jay S (#9), that platform would work very well.
SN @ Feb 28th 2006 9:17AM
Nice concept. I hope they build something that resembles the exterior shape at least. If they do, this could be my 3rd Saab.

"Wow GM managed to mix the Chrysler firepower concept with a saturn sky, big deal."
Wow, you managed to mention two other cars that have long hood/fastback proportions, big deal. It must be frustrating saving your kudos for that one car that looks like no other car on earth.
GH @ Feb 28th 2006 10:49AM
"Yeah, it's neat, but (a) what is even remotely Saab-like about it?"
The 3 port grill, the turbo-charged BioPower engine, the green dash/interior illumination, the fastback hatch (returns), the safety equipment/seats ... just to name a few ... oh, and this is meant to be A LOOK TOWARDS THE FUTURE
"... but I can easily see these lines grafted onto GM's Kappa platform "
Not very likely that they would build an AWD concept on a small RWD platform when the (AWD-capable) Epsilon II platform is due out in just a few short years & would make a much more logical fit

Take a look at the back of the firepower and the front of a saturn sky. This concept looks similar to both those cars. It's just not the proportions that are the same its the design.

Response to 1.)
Agreed, that will be an issue that they will ahve to get into if this design goes inot production... There are ways to design around it (for instance, have a cloth rain guard come out of the roof in full open position) but it is likely a moot point, as doors like these are certainly reserved for conepts. I'd imagine - if launched - we'll see a similarly styled 2 seater with regular doors, and some strenthened super-thin a-pillars.
Response to 7:
If you mean appearance, look up a few cars. From the side, the rear is reminiscent of the 1994-2002 900/9-3. The whole car has a very similar shape to the 70s Saab Sonett III, and the front three hole grille is very characteristically Saab. The rest are mostly future design elements. It would get boring if cars always looked the same.
Technology wise, safety features are a big deal, unique and smart little solutions, like the rear hatch and sliding floor are very typically saab, as are the turbo engine and the ethanol propulsion, which has been something saab has been working with for a while.

Phil is right the overall proportions are the same, and then that's it - the design of the is by FAR from the same, if you think the Aero X has the same design as Sky and Firepower you need glases - go check them out, and don't tell my they look the same: http://www.rsportscars.com/foto/07/saturnsky06_01.jpg

Saab has to build something very close to this car. It really shows off their creativity. Please, Please Saab..... This is one the freshes concept car to come out in along time.Build it and they will come. Too many times car companies will build concepts that will not see production. I think the american public is ready for wild cars like this...Saab, I hope you are listening.
