Ford to build hybrid Edge and Lincoln MKX in Canada by 2010
As part of its presence at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto this week, Ford Motor Company announced Wednesday that it will assemble hybrid variants of their upcoming Edge and [Lincoln] MKX crossover sport utilities in Canada. The move comes as part of the Blue Oval's initiative that will see it churning out 250,000 hybrids by 2010.
Set to be built at Ford's Oakville, Ontario plant, hybrid production is being made possible via a $862 million dollar renovation.

Looks better than any X3 I've seen.
Very nice indeed.

I am sorry, but why 2010? Why not right now? Honda didn't introduce the Civic hybrid of its new model three years after the others, but at the same time. The new Camry appears to be doing the same. Build it now, don't wait!

I like the plan, but like Nicholas, I want it right now. Not four years from now. Patience may be a virtue, but not in an unsettled energy market such as the one we're in.

The Edge will be in production this fall, and it looks like a real hit! There is a good write-up with pix at the Edmunds website: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=108868
Ford has the Hybrid Escape and Mariner in production today, for those who want a hybrid in this size vehicle. Kudos to Ford for being the first in production with a Hybrid crossover vehicle (the Escape is a unibody vehicle, just like the Edge). Ford has also announced plans to add hybrid versions of the Fusion and Milan in the next two years, and the 500, Montego, Edge, and MKX in the 2008 - 2010 timeframe. It takes time to develop and certify this many new hybrid-electric vehicles for production, and Ford is certainly doing a lot more than GM, which continues to just talk about their plans for (partial) hybrids.
