I've always been a fan of the 911 - but a Turbo is simply out of my reach. For that matter, any recent model simply isn't affordable on my dad-with-kids budget.

But I've been keeping my eyes on early 80s non-turbo 911s, which can be surprisingly affordable and (fairly) reasonable to maintain. The mechanically fuel injected 3.0 911 SC models aren't a refined as later years, but are a lot of fun ('78 through '83). The 3.2 Motronic electronically injected model that showed up for '84 jumps up in price, but can approach a reasonable level for a 911 fan on a budget.

Parents bought a '79 911 SC for cheap. It had 89,000 miles on it, but for the past ten years the PO never drove it. My dad and I pulled the engine and checked everythig out ourselves. We found nothing wrong, so we put it back together and changed the fluids.

It's been five years/30,000 miles since and the only thing we've had to do to the 911 was fill up on gas and change the oil.
