Chicago Auto Show: Next-gen Jeep Wrangler undercarriage shots
Autoblog reader Ryan H. requested that we get some picture of the '07 Jeep Wrangler undercarriage. Oh man - those are never easy shots to obtain. Regardless, we're willing to go through the effort it takes to please our readers, even if it means crawling over rocks and dangling expensive cameras precariously near to pools of water. Hopefully they're of some use.
Click through for the pics, which you can click on for some higher-res shots.

Kinda sad to see the last remaining vehicle on the market with AMC style door handles disappear.
It does look like a massive improvement over the TJ Wranglers, which are primitive even by modern 4x4 standards!

Rockcrawler.com has had more, and better, detailed photos of the undercarriage for over a month now, taken at the official reveal at NAIAS.

Looks a lot like a Liberty. Im not a fan of the door handles either, just more soccer mom friendly (especially the rumored 4 door version). Oil pan hangs down quite a bit more then the old 4.0 I-6, but I assume thats because it has a nearly flat hood, not the high arched design that all previous SWB Jeeps have had.
I guess the oil pan wouldn't be much of a problem, since it looks like the motor mount truss would get nailed first on a rock, followed in the rear by the transverse mounted muffler. Looks like all the street queen Wrangler drivers (both YJ and TJ) finally got their wish for a better fuel economy motor, street friendly interior and the option for more bling (18 or 17 inch stock wheels, forget which one it is)...Looks like the only people we have to blame for death of the classic SWB Jeep is us, the drivers.

Everybody has to try not too be so negative.
"It not a real jeep. They changed something. It not like other cars".
The Jeep wranger is a great vehicle, it is different than all the rest, that's the point. Jeep has been great with making it more modern, but keeping it the same stong capable truck. It think it is perfect and the best Jeep yet.

Door handles, your kidding right?
If you're into door handles go to Home Depot.
How about "Can you stuff 33s under it stock?" or "Will it come in a diesel?"
Door handles -HAH!

I don't see why anyone is complaining about the undercarriage. Check out the beefier drag link in the picture. The stock TJ drag link is 5/8" steel, this one looks like its over an inch thick. The driveshafts look a bit beefier too! The whole undercarriage looks a bit more protected than the TJ's. So what if it has 17" wheels, put some 36" tires on it and go 4 wheeling.

BFG M/T Tires? Maybe we won't be seeing any new Rubicons with Wrangler M/T's...

Not a big fan of the rounder bodystyle and giant front fender flares...but I guess you need to give the masses what they want. Nice to see that there's a solid axle instead of IFS.
The scoop under the front bumper is a bit cheesy looking...I can imagine that some of those will be showing up on the trails after they get cranked on the rocks. Change is good, I guess, but I'll be sticking w/ my TJ.

Jeez, whine about the door handles, whine about 17 inch wheels, whine about TJ's and YJ's. Get over it, it's a Jeep, they obviously thought they were improving it. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Me personally, I like it.

I bought my daughter a YJ back in 1993 if my memory serves me well. The door handles were of an absolutely stupid design. They froze up in the winter several times and required major dealer sevice at least once a year. Jeep has since made the soft top more user friendly. I am happy to see the demise of the soft top especially since it had plastic windows that discolored in time. I would love to see a Wrangler with 3 Torsen differentials (all with manual locking by switches on the dash). I would even be willing to pay a little extra for fully independent suspension all around. Too bad the in-line 6 is gone -- Chrysler should have developed it into a twin cam with 4 valves per cylinder. I would love to see a Wrangler with an in-line diesel with a cast iron block or at least with cast-in liners.
