Volkswagen's Spanish subsidiary SEAT launched its restyled Ibiza Monday. Five trim levels combine with eleven (count
'em, eleven!) engine options to give European buyers a choice of 18 different Ibiza configurations.
The
engine range is unchanged from last year, ranging from a 1.2-liter gas engine developing 64 hp, to a 1.8-liter,
20-valve turbo putting out 180 hp. Five diesels range from a 70 hp, 1.4-liter engine to a 1.9-liter, 160 hp unit. More
pics after the jump.

I think it looks good in whatever expensive trim level that is, but one has to wonder why so much choice? Or is this just the wonders of the VW family lego inspired designs?

So much choice because they are built to order. So you, the consumer, can get exactly what you want. And VW can sell as many cars as they can because they can meet the consumer demands.
Personally, I'll take the TDI 160 hp. In black.

So what's actually changed? That's the FR (top of the line TDI). Ibiza's are all over the place in Mexico, running with the ancient 2.0l 8v 115HP engine from the old golf/jetta.

From a design point the rear end and side profile are distinct, clean and fresh! Tight arches around the wheels give a tailored look that many more expensive car manufacturers could learn from. But, the front nose clip came right off a Hyundai design table, just terrible cloning. Too bad, because it is almost bulls-eye for economy pretty and unique. What were they thinking? The hood has the Triburon-like groves slooping down to the light fixtures, and the headlight/grill looks like the nose clip from the 2005 Elantra:

I saw a SEAT here in Los Angeles that was driving up from Mexico. I wondered why they sell them in Mexico and yet not here.
Also, can't believe they Mexico cars use that horrid 8v VW engine! YUK! My friend almost bought a Jetta with that engine -- thankfully I talked him into a 1.8T.

This car looks as if it could be a Daewoo. The rear looks like the same car sold by Suzuki, called the Reno. The front grill has a Daewoo signature grill from their old cars in the US.

Do you guys think that possibly the Koreans copied older SEAT designs, and this is merely an update? It is not as though any Asian car company has ever come up with any original designs.

older seats don't look as good as they do now. i'd take this over any vw.

This is just a facelift, isn't it? The old Ibiza looked exactly the same, and has been touring Europe for years now.
