GM's Welburn hints at production for the Camaro
Speaking at the Automotive News World Congress, Ed Welburn, Camaro fanatic and GM Vice President Global Design, all
but confirmed that the Camaro concept will see production. While he wouldn't say that GM had decided to produce the popular concept, he did hint that production could happen more quickly than the usual three year product cycle.
Automotive News cites GM sources as saying that the production car will be little changed from the concept, except for a lower cost version of the interior to go with an entry-level V6 model.
The first major step toward possible production will come later this year, with the rollout of the Zeta rear-drive platform by GM's Holden subsidiary.

Perfect timing (at least from a selfish perspective), I have a 2001 Z28 that has 70K miles, by 2008 it will be well over 100K - perfect time to get a nice new one...

If anyone from GM is listening: please, please, please dont go too retro on the interior, there is nothing nice about an interior from the past... and also while I'm begging, please, please, please DONT make leather standard (I dont like sitting on cow skin)...

Konrad, you can put a sheepskin seatcover over the leather.

If you can make it in two years with few changes I think you will sell many, many Camaros. A two tone interior would be a welcome option.

I hope they don't screw this one up, anybody remember the original AWD Wide Track Grand Prix, what was suppose to be the new GTO. I think it was around 94-95 concept vehicle.

Great! Get it started, but just the thought of the sound of "lower cost version of the interior" could ruin the whole thing. Please make the interior of supreme quality on both V8 and V6 versions. Some people don't want absolute and optimum speed and power, but I would think they do want high quality interiors. This is one main reason many American's choose Import brands because of the use of high quality materials on entry level models as well as the lofty extra umph' models.

i totally agree w/ Emery about the neccessity for a quality interior. that's one of the reasons i got turned off by the charger.
i really hope they can build it w/in 24 months.
GM, please also make a convertible w/in a year after the coupe.

A Camaro should be an American car, built in America with a V8, not some aussie clunker with a V6.

So it's back to the good ol' times then. I'm really looking forward to a comparison test that reads Camaro vs. Challenger vs. Mustang vs. GTO.
Hopefully they build it, and hopefully, the quality will be up to today's levels.

You do know that Camaros used to be built in Canada, right?

The pictures of the Camaro concept are beautiful. Build it and we will buy it. Enough said.

I would like to know why the US has to wait for the brand new stuff to come out of Australia? One of my biggest complaints across the board (Cars, HDTV, Cell Phone, PC's, etc.) is that everyone else get's "the latest" before us. Maybe if you tried catering to your home market first, sales might improve.
