Man gets his Corvette back after it was stolen 37 years ago
It
might not end up on the TV show Cold Case, but it's pretty darn impressive nonetheless. 37 years ago, New York
City resident Alan Poster parked his car in a parking garage, not realizing that it would be the last time he would ever
see his beloved car for almost four decades. Poster reported the vehicle missing and, when nothing came of
his report, got on with his life.
37 years later, the vehicle was found in a shipping container headed to Sweden from Long Beach, NY. Officials checking up on the vehicle found that it had been reported stolen in 1969, and did some pretty impressive detective work to track Poster down to give this story a happy ending. Check out the link for more details.
Thanks to Ken for the tip.

Does he have to give back his insurance settlement? With interest?

From what I understand the car was well cared for. Therefore, even if he has to pay back the insurance company, it may be worth it as the value of the car is quite high now.

That's awesome. I am utterly speechless. I don't know if Mr. Poster is an autoblog reader, but if he is, then congratulations sir. You are deffinately one of the lucky ones... BTW, has anyone read how many miles are on it? Jusr curious to see how much the thief drove that beauty.

"Does he have to give back his insurance settlement? With interest?"
According to the story, the owner somehow didn't have any insurance.

Yes, you're right. I read the Reuters (?) story yesterday. That's the reason he is getting it back: he did not have insurance when the car was stolen. If he did, the insurance co. would get the car and auction it.
Lucky guy. All I can say is, it's too bad it wasn't a '67 instead of a '68.

Sorry, the link should be up. Sometimes I don't attach them properly with the new software -- user error.

Ahh, there was a time when people only bought insurance just to have it. 40 years ago vehicle insurance was a luxury. You didn't have to have auto insurance in those days, just a valid drivers license and the cash to buy the car.

I was just about to say that Will. Back then insurance was a luxury, and many if not most people didn't have insurance. Luckily for this guy he's one of the non insured.
