VIDEO: VW Eos retracting hardtop
The VW Eos does, however, have an industry first for hardtop convertibles, or so says VW – a sunroof. So you can have a little sun in your Eos or a lot.

This is a very cool car. The sunroof opens up and slides back. The top worked very smooth and cleared the people in the back seat. This car is really going to sell.

All you hater cuz you got a rag-top should shut the hell up. i bet you haven't even seen it in person and are already judjing it from those gay looking pictures on the internet. you can't say anything unless you have actually seen it in person and sat in it. the hardtop works flawlessly and i noticed the people that make fun of this car are the ones that ahve an ugly looking rag-top piece of crap sitting in their driveway. the car looks great and i know when it comes out i will get one. I just purchased a 2006 Jeta 2.5. its a blast to drive and can't wait to have an eos sitting next to my jetta.

Holy crap! You've got to admit that's pretty cool. A convertible WITH a sunroof!
And yes the EOS doesn't look as cool as the Volvo, but with all the extra "oragami" going on, there's more chance for something to break.

Cool? Yes. Very, but I wouldn't trust VW or GM to engineer them and source parts in a way that won't make for a bunch of trouble down the road (so to speak). Tell you what... I'll keep enjoying looking at yours... and the reliability of my ragtop.

I believe mercedes has a sunroof option on the SL, or at least some models of it

The vw seems faster than the volvo, even though the volvo looks cooler

Wow, can Michael Chrichton name his next book "Eos"? Because that thing is going to be a study in how chaos theory can mess you up.
The Eos seems to have about 8 more servo-actuated parts than the Volvo... and they are all little flaps which look like they could get mis-aligned by a hurried suitcase loading.
Considering the part that NEVER worked in my much-maligned Golf was an over-complicated trunk latch with microswitches that got easily defeated by lubricating grease, I imagine that the checks-and-balances required for an "all clear" on roof operation will constantly get plagued by position switch misreads or servo malfunction. They must have given the Eos a sunroof because they knew the full roof would only be operational on humid 59 degree days (just like that trunk latch)
It also looks like lots of these flaps are going to be going on about 4 inches from rear-passengers heads. I imagine "crossed fingers on noses and mind your hair" will be called out before tentatively hitting the "roof down" button.
No Wonder VW had to delay the things citing quality concerns.... I'd hate to see the first-model-year recall on these things.

the hardtop is kinda cool... but the Eos itself is a hideous peice of sheetmetal.

The Renault Megane comes with a hardtop convertible, and a glass roof (basically a sun-roof).
And then there's the M-B SL which has the Panorama sunroof.
So basically, VW is making up reasons to buy their bland-looking Eos.

A lie, this is not the first car with a hard top and a sunroof. The renault Megane CC has a one as standard. It is in the market for two years now.
VW is late in the CC game and its hard top is flawed and will create nighmares for the future owners (if any). This is a truth.

Yawn... old news. Mercedes first offered hardtops in their CLK models a couple of years ago.

The Eos roof is a big step forward compared to currently available retractables. Look at those french cars and you will notice the pillar is pulled way back towards the cabin - that is because they can't make a roof good enough to cover all the distance.
And just having a panel of glas instead of a panel of metal isn't actually what you call a sun-roof. You cann call it a design faux-pax, though

The real question that would obviate any concern is, How much?

The VW does not work. dot. This is by the way why they have delayed so much this car. Let say, for example you open it and drive for two hours, because of the lack of the structural rigidity of the platform the metal at the buttom of the car is working (extending), when you try to close it again, you will see one or two inches missing between the roof and the wind shield. ohhh....what can you do? Bring an umbrella (as said by David). Trust me the French have learnt this lesson the hard way, VW has yet to learn it.

The 1995 Mitsubishi 3000 GT SR-4 has a hardtop convertible. The Lexus SC430 is a hard top convertible, and the 1957 Ford made the first hardtop convertible. I want one.
