Chrysler targeting improved efficiency

Chrysler is
aiming to catch up with Asian manufactuerers in efficiency. Currently producing vehicles at a rate of one car in 35.85
hours, the company is aiming to drop this number below 30, which would place it competitively between Honda (32.02
hours), Nissan (29.43), and Toyota (27.9). CEO Tom LaSorda says that the company is already retooling manufacturing
plants for production flexibility in order to meet the goal.
Considering that Chrysler has already improved its
efficiency by 4.2 percent in 2005 and is expected to be in the high 5 percentage range for improvement in
2006, LaSorda sees no reason why the company won't meet the goal.

I can't speak from personal opinion, because I haven't driven a DCX product since they introduced the SRT-4 Neon, but I think Chrysler should be more worried about catching up with the quality of their vehicles before they try being more effecient in making them.
Right now, I have a feeling trying to manufacture a car faster will hit quality pretty hard.

You know when I first looked at this headline I thought it was going to talk about fuel effciency, how could I have been so stupid? A fuel effcient Chrysler, now that is some good shit.

What do Ford and GM do, just for comparison's sake?

My Dodge Neon 5-speed got me 42 MPG on my trip from Cleveland to Greenville South Carolina...I'd say that is pretty damn efficient

All UAW shops are inherantly inefficient. It's the passive-aggressive DNA of the union that makes the shops this way. If you want to be a hard worker you're brow beaten by union thugs into "not making everybody else look bad," so efficiency improvements can only go so far in a union shop. The UAW also insists on having three people do the job of two (more dues) and resisting automation at every turn. The best plants in the world are highly automated and non-union. Good luck Chrysler, maybe you can toss the UAW and get something done.

I came across a really cool website displaying Jeep Wranglers with lifts, oversized tires, new custom alloy wheels and detailed to near new condition. Most of them have warranties. There is a video with an attractive young lady explaining their process. Worth checking out.
