In comparison to the current Camry, this is a HUGE step up in style for both the interior and exterior. This blows away the minor upgrades that were done to the Accord for the '06 model year. If I was in the market for a Camry/Accord/Altima/Impala/500, I would put my money on the Camry.

Toyota is not using as much wood in its interiors. Even the Lexus LS460 has less wood than its main competition such as phantom and maybach.
This is bad because because competitors might take advantage. And good because it saves trees and conserves the environment.
Upon thinking a little bit more, the europeans should cut back on wood too. Their barbaric attack on environment and animals is creating lot of problems for global climate and ecosystem.

I am a big Camry-hater, but even I have to admit this is a wise style for Toyota to follow. It's a neat evolution, and it's more muscular, in line with consumer tastes and mid- to late-2000s design. Cab-forward suits Camry, too. Reminds me of the changeover from the first Vitz/Platz/Yaris/Echo to the second one.

268hp? The accord and maxima are slower now, the accord looks unbelievably bland, and the interior of this camry will be better than the maximas.Speed use to hurt the camry, but now it and the avalon are the best in class.
Ferguson McSqueege @ Jan 9th 2006 7:07PM
What a hideous design. I don't even know where to start.
I know who I'd make my check out to...Mazda (or even Subaru).
Kevin Buchanan @ Jan 9th 2006 7:08PM
If the alternative is Toyota plastic, I'll take a few planks of dead tree in my interior. That silver plastic is nas-tee.
JP @ Jan 9th 2006 7:18PM
#2. I wouldn't call the Phantom and Maybach the the LS460's main competition...more like the S-class and 7-series.
WolfgangNC @ Jan 9th 2006 7:33PM
when did Mazda (front half) and BMW (back half) have a kid???
Jennet @ Jan 9th 2006 7:36PM
It's that too-simple-cheap-looking plastic and metal interior...Why can't they put moonroof and front heated seats standard when you order leather package like Accord? Or is it just me or does that Camry looks like Sonata (the fatty image of it, and the tailight..)
Ted Schafer @ Jan 9th 2006 7:36PM
Yep - a little Mazda 6 in the front with some Acura TL thrown in for good measure.
Nothing original about the design at all.
Now about that 160mph speedo.... that is funny.
Lee Gibson @ Jan 9th 2006 7:37PM
"Even the Lexus LS460 has less wood than its main competition such as phantom and maybach"
On what planet? How many LS460's can you buy for the price of a Rolls or a Maybach?

It's all about final pricing, safety gear, and what really ends up on commonly-optioned models.
Will the interior look nice on the "ad specials" I like to buy? Will every car have ABS and side curtain airbags (so that the "ad specials" will too)?
They used to say "no one got into trouble [with their bosses] buying IBM" data processing gear. Now I think its "no one gets into trouble with their spouses buying a Camry for a family car."
I still think the Malibu Maxx has a lot to offer, and if Chevy would "European-ize" the Malibu, IT would have a lot to offer. First, they could stop putting the wimpy 2.2 in the base model, and put the 2.4 into it instead, like on the Pontiac G6; next, they could (yawn) upgrade from their venerable (but reliable) 4 speed automatic. (Are the toothing pains with the Aisin 5 speeds over?) HEY GM, VW sold cars with vastly inferior to GM reliability records, MAINLY because they had taught handling and simple, but elegant, interiors - when are you going to bring the European "talent" over here to give us a "driver's car" that we can still sneak by the wife?
Anyway, I can't knock the 16 inch wheels on the new Camry, or its new exterior look, and the mere existence of a 5 speed manual (enthusiasts - yay!) in what is otherwise a mom-mobile.
My main hope is this will force Honda to discount their Accords more aggressively. :-)

My 1984 Camry is still going strong after having been driven 255,000 miles, but I'll probably now replace it with the 2007 Camry hybrid, a great-looking car that I can hardly wait to test-drive.
ss @ Jan 9th 2006 7:52PM
wow... it doesn't look like Toyota at all...
seems to me is a proposal for New Civic from Toyota or something... although at accord size...
Scott Pierce @ Jan 9th 2006 8:17PM
What is up with that snout? Remembering my '03, the nose was low-slung, proportional to the body, and gorgeous. This thing looks as though it was designed to Euro pedestrian safety standards.
So sad for the art of design to be regulated out of existence.
Nonetheless, I will wait to pass final judgement until I see it in person.
Good luck with that.
York @ Jan 9th 2006 8:20PM
look a little clunky, not smooth at all. A few nice touches here and there in the interior but, standard Toyota styling.
Za @ Jan 9th 2006 8:34PM
It's considerably better than the outgoing so I am not complaining.
Blake @ Jan 9th 2006 8:35PM
There's no wood! How is this EVER going to compete with the new S-Class????
DarkKnight67 @ Jan 9th 2006 8:46PM
This car is about as lacking in style as anything I've seen from Toyota. It copies at least 10 different designs (love the Mazda/BMW mating comment) and everything that has come out in the last year - without improving them! Can someone tell me what that grill is supposed to signify? Certainly nothing like the current version that has at least a marginal sense of style.
Maybe in Toyota's quest to be number one, they've forgotten what got them there and stepped in number two.
