Toyota's Yaris TRD
Apparently Toyota is well aware that the North American market may view the Yaris compact as wanting in the power and handling department. Stuart found a Yaris on display at the L.A. auto show tuned by Street Image with a ton of TRD parts that may address this issue directly. Highlights include 18-inch wheels, a Sportivo suspension, lightweight flywheel and mechanical LSD. Street Image, known for its tuned Scions and Avalons from SEMA, also added an Eclipse AV/Nav system and custom rear subwoofer housing.

The Yaris that is being introduced here is not the same cvar that has been sold in europe for years. Our version of that car was the echo. The only thing the echo did not have of that previous generation yaris was the three door. This is the next generation yaris and I think it will be a winner based on looks, handling(with the TRD suspension), and fuel economy. As to the person who asked what parts on the above car would make it faster, how about the TRD header(referred to as exhaust manifold), the TRD exhaust, and the cold air intake. Granted they make only add up to a tenth or two in the quatermile, but they do add a few horsepower and when driven prudently better fuel economy. It's just a nice car built to compete with the chevy aveo, hyundai accent, and suzuki reno. I do agree about the 18 inch wheels, however they are excessive. 16s or 17s max would have looked better and offered better performance.

First of all I don't know how you can say that the Yaris is an Echo. The Yaris is in fact the same car from Europe based on the Scion xA platform (no echo relationship ,only the power plant). Second I do realize that the Focus and Colbalt have more power and are also less econonmic. I could never buy any of those car becuase its still an Escort and a Cavilier (aka POS). This car is already a hit in Canada and think will also be a huge hit in the US. It only has 106 hp and 103 ft*lbs but the car only weighs 2800 lbs. This car is not going to be a drag car but a oversized go cart. Its is cheap and has a lot of potentail for power. At SEMA a TRD prototype has already been shown for xA and Xb with a Garrett T25R turbocharger with intercooler to add 50hp and 50 ft*lbs of torque with 7 psi of boost. All it needs is a good set of tires with sport suspention and whola... a go kart or a japanise mini.
This car has got nothing but great reviews and I have own lots of american biult cars and they are still crap. The only reason car have improved reliablity and quality is due to Japanise influences. For instance the cobalt VVT-i eco-tec engine developed by Toyota.
My last word would be that any other compeditor in the subcompact class is Korean; Aveo= Daewoo, Kia, and Hyundai are all Korean junk.
PS. a chyrsler challenger is no even close to the same part of the market or price range and dodges are also crap..but getting better.

I own an '07 Toyota Yaris 1.5 1NZ-FE m/t and frankly it is a big go-kart! It is very fuel effiecent, best in it's class on real world driving. It's fun to drive, you can drive it like a sane person (and get awesome fuel mileage, 525-560km to 40ish liters of fuel) or you can drive it like you stole it (and get ok fuel mileage, 450-500kms to the same amount of fuel); the car drifts with minimal ease from the factory (canada) and hugs most corners that are of 70 degrees or less @ 80 Km/h, will take 90 gedree right turns @ 50 Km/h without understeer (from factory). The performance capabilities of this car are phenominal, by that I mean that the owner has the option of throwing a turbo kit on their car for a performance upgrade, or choosing one of the many supercharger kits on the market while still taking advantage of the VVT-i capabilities of the vehicle. I am currently eyeing up a s/c kit from "BLITZ" http://www.nolimitmotorsport.com/prod/BZ-10157 It's bolt on, and the instructions (from "BLITZ"s' website in .pdf format) are easy to follow making instalation a breeze (even for those with minimal automotive/electrical knowledge) 7psi for $3000!?! I'm willing to pay that for bolt on ease and general power increase.

the yaris will be a great platform for autocrossing and the such. with it being so light just add on a supercharger, coilover and sways and it will make many cars that cost 2 even 3 times as much look bad. the potential here is again the lightness of the car. definately a car for those who want to twink/experiment around and love to drive small technical track instead of flooring it on every stright.

Wait. Did I see Chrysler and quality in the same sentence up there? I'm 100% sure those words don't belong near each other. Unless you consider dropping 3 transmissions at 39K good, not to mention poor fit and finish with paint that seems to chip off above 40mph. Ever wonder why chrysler vehicles have such horrible resale value? Maybe it's because there bad vehicles...but its a good thing they have press releases saying that the quality difference is minimal to that of the Japanese, I believe them, in fact I'm headed to my nearest Chrysler dealer right now in hopes I can find one of those purple neons whos paint is completly missing from the hood, roof, and trunk. Maybe If I'm lucky it will already have had its head gasket replaced at the average 65k mile mark.

I have a 2008 yaris, it is the most inexpensive new car u can buy, at 11,000 it has all the quality that toyota is known for, is fuel-efficient, tops in reliability and pays for itself in gas savings, and will last 300k, how many american car companies can say that...NONE

Wow, what a bunch of morronic posts. This is an econo car, w/payments of around $200 a month you can't go wrong with this car. All you SUV & Challanger lovers can go buy one and pay my Yarris car payment in gas every week. As for the Focus, Cobbalt, etc. no thanks. I would never drive American. The two we have owned have turned out to be true TURDS. Chrystler's statent is probably true given the short time people are owning cars these days. Long run, jury still out. And finally, all the under powered statemts, I don't think anyone will be buying this car to go race V8s down the track. However, this little car's got lots of potential, easily built to 200hp+. This example is nothing of what this little car can be as far as performance...

OHhh lets not get me going on Chrysler. We owned one of those Lipus Blue Neons. Chryslers standard answers were:"Delamination of the paint, what are you talking about, We have never had that happen" "Your head gasket is blown, again" and "yes we confirmed your speedometer and gauges do not work, that is normal"!!!!

Dude... you guys are dumb. We just got one and for only having 106bhp, it's pretty peppy. All the "bigger is better" thinking is for mouthbreathing conservative hicks. Granted it's no I6 TT Supra, but until you have driven one, you can't say crap. Also author of comment #8, Toyota obviously has more than 4 engines (I'm sure you knew that), and also... let's take a look at some domestic companies that have been using the same ONE engine for years... i.e. GM, Ford, etc... Anyway, enough with my ranting, while you guys are paying out the ass for gas, I'll be happily cruising along getting damn near 40mpgs city.

This is a $12,000 subcompact with a 1.5 liter engine. What exactly is it that you expect from it? It's designed for economy performance at an entry-level price point. With forced induction (though the 1NZ-FE rods are a known weakness) and better suspension it would be vaguely similar to a lightweight Mini, although without further modification the Yaris' center of gravity is higher and I doubt the interior is not going to feel as appointed as that of a Mini, nor are you going to achieve the Mini's output just by bolting on a turbo/sc.
Regardless, this is not a TRD Yaris (this is some tuner that slapped on a handful of TRD parts) and I'd be surprised if they brought one to the U.S., since this car is aimed very squarely at getting people out the door with a Toyota as cheaply as possible. This is the same engine in the xA and xB, so while it might seem economical in this multi-vehicle sense to offer the SC option, it does not make great business sense to offer a $3,200 (the tC version) option for a car in this price range. Also, consider the conservative results achieved with the tC, which started with a C/R of 9.6:1, while the Yaris is starting at 10.5:1. There are a lot of factors in determining the impact of forced induction, but all other things being equal, the 5 or 7 psi (I couldn't find a reliable source on this) of the tC charger isn't even going to get you the same 40hp on this car. Given the higher compression and only about 2/3 the displacement, your $3,000 isn't going to get you much at all. There are aftermarket FI options that claim a 50hp increase on the 1NZ-FE engine and I even found some claims that a Greddy kit is operating at 240hp, but a turbo and bolt-ons don't get you a 120% increase here. If in fact someone has the 1NZ-FE at that level of output, there's no doubt they have heavily modified the engine internals and more than likely have one-off parts.
As a caveat to this statement, TRD does make performance parts for the Vitz (aka Yaris) because of its use in racing. If you're willing to spend the cash, you could certainly exploit the potential of your Yaris, but from a Return On Investment analysis in terms of performance you are wasting money on the extreme end of the scale when compared to most vehicles. Also worth noting is that the Vitz RS was Toyota's answer to widespread petition for a more sporting model than the original Vitz. Even some high profile drivers from Drift in Japan got involved in the campaign, and that's ostensibly why the current 1.5 liter engine was dropped in, so at best it seems you could argue for the TRD Vitz 'Sport M' model to be translated into a Yaris for the U.S.
Culturally, Japan and Europe are much better markets for small cars like this, so offering true performance versions can be profitable. By contrast, while America is certainly buying more compacts and subcompacts than we historically have, it is nowhere near the type of environment they have across the pond, and the TRD Vitz 'Sports M' model that does exist is only putting out 119hp.
In the end, the Yaris has some potential to be fun when tossed around. If you like the styling then you need no more justification than all of the people tuning other base model compacts, but potential buyers shouldn't be operating under the illusion that TRD is going to come along and offer a $4,000 solution that transforms the Yaris into something it's not.

Ok,personally, I think the "yaris" (which is actually the Vitz) is a great car for really anyone. The "econo-box" that it originally is will appeal to people that want to save on gas. The lightness of the car will appeal to tuners. (The real ones not the FF ricers) So what if it's a 1.5 I4 only pushing out 100hp, the car only weighs about 2500 pounds. Anything that light will happily respond to 200 whp. Don't hate it just because it's a Toyota and you like Honda/ford/chevy. Because you're going to be sorely disappointed when a boosted (Turbo not SC) Vitz walks you pushing 200-300hp. Oh, and if you think thats impossible.....you're a retard.

to the guy who thinks that the car is called the TRD....TRD is a company called Toyota Racing Development. The car is called a yaris. So wannabe's like this guy can take his face and shove it up his ass. Get your facts straight before posting or else you just look like an idiot trying to be cool. As for the guy with the comment about the imports being ricers.... head over to cb7tuner and check out some 92 accords that are putting down a nice 640 whp. I don't see your shitty cavelier doing that.

Test drove a Yaris Y.R.X.5spd,so i say to Toyota its not safe at anny speed, the nee bag inovation is a good step however the clutch pedal ergonomics are dangerous [just where do i put my size9 left foot]the only space is under the clutch pedal pedal{no room to put your your foot to the left of the clutch and why no foot rest i can see a lot of left foot injuries and law suites coming at toyota and a lot of left foot injuries and amputations. Is Toyota so hungry that thay can`t fix this problem for $10 bucks[otherwise its a good little runaround fof a car].

1. hehe's accord EX is a turd and can only own cars that have about 50 or so less horsepower than it.
2. the Yaris and Accord are in two COMPLETELY different size classes, sub-compact vs. mid-size, respectively.
ANYWAY...
I am a current xB owner and am thinking about trading it in for one of these cars. Obviously horsepower is hard to come by with these cars, however, I am sure that a lower weight and lower center of gravity would increase the fun factor a bit. However, I average about 34-35 MPG with a very un-aerodynomic box and could only expect the Yaris to use less gas- it weighs about 200 lbs. less and most definitely has a better drag coef. Plus, this car is peanuts to buy! Remember people, this car wasn't made to be the next supercar, but a car that fits society's current need: fuel efficiency (although if gas wasn't an issue, I would still have my bored-out stang :))

You can think about this car wath you want, but i tell you, this car is amazing. I drive an Yaris TS Turbo with 180 bhp/ 950 kg from swiss and it goes about 150 mph and from 0-100 kmh it needs 6,6 -6,8 seconds. You can drive your big bad us muscle cars, but no one of this cars make so much fun like this pocket rocket.

i own a yaris liftback and want to do many cosmetic upgrades;18" rims and 1" lowering, etc. Yeah this is an economy car. With all these blogs about how weak this engine is...(so what) Its all about expression really, and making the car look nice, Like an art form. I love to just cruise and enjoy the ride. And it brings me from point Ato B. In the real world, I don't need 200+ horsepower to get me a bag of groceries. Or do i need to be all that fast to go to my place of work, which is 10 minutes away? Do i have to be quicker than the next guy? for what? what does it accomplish? And with people boasting about how fast their car is, how about racing somebody with the same horsepower and making it even? Im sure its fun to have a super fast car, but In my econo box,can I get props for getting good gas mileage for the real world? with high costs of gas today?
