For family-types pining for Pontiac’s Solstice but put off by a complete lack of trunk space, EDAG Engineering Design AG have something in a shooting brake they’d like to show you. Said to be inspired by the Pontiac Safari wagons of the 1950s and 1960s, we think EDAG's Solstice estate reminds us of the dearly-departed BMW M Coupe crossed with an old modular Nissan Pulsar NX or Geo Storm wagon (remember?).
Set to debut next week in Detroit, the concept retains the Solstice’s wind-in-your-coif capability, while sporting a new look and offering a modest increase in stowage space. It also might provide a little comfort for those hoping to see the promised (but now nixed) Kappa-platform Chevy Nomad.

is this an after market kit or some new body variant...
this is actually cool... like a bigger take on the after market miata hard top... oops

Not sure how this is inspired by a safari, but Pontiac needs to make this so that we can race these little bargins, hopefully GMAC will see the need for this guy and get this out of the custom coachworks.

The MGB GT and the Z3 Coupe are the standard... this misses.

This concept is reminiscent of the Chevy Kammback Vega of the 1970's but GM would dare not resurrect that memory.

Badass.

Chevy made something like this for the '04 autoshow. It was called the Chevy Nomad:

This is not a Pontiac show car. It is from EDAG Engineering Design AG. The AG leads me to believe it is a German company. Sadly, I don't think this will look good either.
The Solstice is a work of art.

Looks like King Kong stepped on a cayenne from porsche to me.

Somebody has too much time on thier hands!! Don't ruin a good thing!

I think this looks good and is a great idea. I like the idea of a sports car that can carry some bagage and maybe even support a roof rack to carry bikes or kyaks when necessary. This would provide the fun of a two seater, but be more versitile and be useable for vacation trips

EGAD it's a EDAG!

I think it's an horrendous idea to put a 1950s Chevy Nomad type roof on a tiny, yet perfect roadster.

Hey, at least we're talking about something exciting from Pontiac, period! Seem like there are mixed views, but Pontiac is making people talk and turn heads. Cheers!

Cute but kind of silly. It's too low and small to carry anything, so why bother screwing up a handsome sporty car?
Fragmaster170 @ Jan 4th 2006 2:22AM
I agree with DCH. This rather reminds me of a Volvo P1800ES, perfectly good car styling ruined.

#14 too suave: I seem to remember Volvo doing this with the P1800. You couldn't carry anything in it either, but it sure made for a fine-looking car that today draws a pretty hefty price.

I like it. If it comes powered with the 260hp turbo, and is priced below the Z4 Coupe, this might be a good choice for sportscar drivers who need a trunk.

Sorry about the double post.

Can you say "Jump the Shark?" Wow - Detroit finds a way to milk every ideas waaay beyond dry. They took a nice design and screwed it up... and the worst part is they SHOWED IT to us! Part of being a great car company is not taking ideas well past their brilliance and showing them to the public. The Mona Lisa with an iPod on. Yuck.
