Porsche announced that it has ended the three-year production run of the Carrera GT by delivering the final unit to a customer in the United Arab Emirates. The last Carrera GT is the 1,111th off the line, which puts the final production run a few hundred or so short of Porsche’s original target of 1,500 copies. Inside Line reports that more than half of all the cars sold ended up in North America, however.
Though only in production for three years, Porsche is calling its Carrera GT the “most successful high-performance sports car of all time.” We’re not sure on what criteria this claim is based, but we’re fairly certain despite never having received one to review (what’s up with that, Porsche?) that the Carrera GT more than held its own in an elite class of autos.

Last year 2 guys died in a Carrera GT at California Speedway. Reportedly they hit a fence side-on at 100mph, and despite wearing belts and helmets, and despite the fact that the car looked intact after the smash, both died. Has anyone seen a report on why such a simple-looking accident was fatal? Did the car's carbon-fiber construction contribute?

Internal organs really don't handle the g's of a 100 to 150MPH impact into a concrete barrier too well; especially a side impact in which the car does not have enough energy absorbing abilities...
my guess... @ Jan 3rd 2006 2:43AM
My guess is they died because they hit a wall sideways at 100MPH.
A race car driver might have survived, but they're in 5 or 6 point harnesses, in a vehicle with a "tub" around the driver that is very rigid. Any street car has openable doors (except the Lotus 340R I guess) which sacrifices strength for the ability to get in and out easily.
I've seen the pictures, that car was far from intact after the crash.
