Boss Mustang may be on the way to combat Challenger and Camaro

With 400 HP versions of the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger hitting the streets in the next few years, the Mustang GT and its 300 HP will quickly be regulated to backmarker status. Sure, there's the terrifying Shelby GT500 on its way next year, but its price will put it out of the reach of many Mustang buyers. As a result, Ford is said to be working on a Boss version of the S197, possibly using a naturally-aspirated 5.4L version of its Mod motor architecture in an attempt to keep up in the horsepower wars. The FPV version of this engine used down under produces 390 HP, which should provide 'stang buyers with sufficient power to wage battle on the crosstown competition.

If they use the 5.4L would that make it the Boss329?

I really wish they would stop making "special" versions of the Mustang.

The engine they are talking about is the 5.4L DOHC Cobra R engine of 2000. It has been used widely Downunder in 4-door cars, for FPV and non-FPV applications. The shortblocks, with heads and cranks are already being built in Windsor, for Oz applications.
The powerplant ironically is already marketed under the name Boss: "Boss 260" and "Boss 290" (kw), making 348 and 388 hp respectively.
Mustang has needed these engines for years. Why not here?

The 5.4 is a good start but I've been thinking, why is there no love for the Cammer 5.0? That number is synonymous with the Mustang.

I thought the "Boss" name was sold to Larry Shinoda's daughter and son-in-law. But a return of the Boss would be f'in fantastic. I would DEFINITELY buy one. You hear me, Ford?

I would much rather see the Boss than another Bullitt Mustang.

I really wished they made more of them. Aren't the special editions the reson for the Mustangs status today? Can you imagine a Mustang history without a Boss 429, Mach 1, or Shelby? I'd rather have a well made special edition than a tuner car.

"...the Mustang GT and its 300 HP will quickly be regulated to backmarker status."
That should read "relegated" not "regulated".

#4, the 5.0 cammer doesn't cut it due to durability reqs, the engine was manufactured strictly as an aftermarket piece. Ford would have to engineer a brand new mutation of the mod motor for an honest 5.0, that or destroke a 5.4 to get its 5.0. The heck with that, give me a V10 Boss 351! They had a mule with just such an engine, it was a 4v 4.6 with two cylinders added for 5.8 liters of displacement stuffed in the previous generation chassis.
