2007 Toyota Yaris hits the U.S.

Toyota's Yaris, its best-seller in Europe, makes its U.S. debut this spring with the new 2007 sedan and hatchback models, and Toyota has released the full specs and pictures for both variants.
After it rolled out in Europe in 1999, the Yaris grabbed both the 2000 European COTY and the 2000 Japan COTY awards. In the U.S., the Yaris will replace the unsuccessful Echo subcompact.
The new Yaris is bigger than the popular European version, and rides on a brand-new platform that will be used in a number of future vehicles.
Both the sedan and hatchback versions seat five and are powered by a 1.5-liter, 106 hp VVT-i four-cylinder engine, through either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The manual transmission version is good for an EPA rating of 34 city/40 highway.

Press Release:
European Favorite Toyota Yaris Arrives in U.S. in All-New Liftback and Sedan Versions
12/26/2005 Torrance, CA
The 2007 Toyota Yaris will make its U.S. debut when it arrives in showrooms this spring in four-door Sedan and three-door Liftback configurations.
First launched in Europe in 1999, the Yaris was named the 2000 European "Car of the Year" and has become Toyota's best-selling model in the European market. In fact, Yaris was also named "Japan Car of the Year," marking the first time the same vehicle captured both honors in the same year. For the U.S., the Yaris will replace the ECHO in the subcompact passenger-car segment.
"As Toyota's most affordable passenger car, the Yaris will feature contemporary exterior styling and a surprising upscale interior," said Jim Lentz, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. "It will be one of the most economic and youthful passenger cars Toyota has built in the subcompact category."
The Yaris Liftback will be offered in one grade, while the Sedan will offer two grades, adding a sport-themed Yaris S.
Contemporary Styling
Yaris Liftback was styled at Toyota's European design studio, ED² and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Design Division. Both the Sedan and Liftback feature class-up styling, and a new level of refinement, sophistication, and fun-to-drive experience to the entry subcompact segment. Both Yaris configurations ride on an all-new platform that is longer and wider than its European predecessor, and will be the basis for a wide variety of future vehicles.
Yaris construction includes high-tensile steel, creating a lightweight yet rigid body to help enhance driving control and responsive steering. Reduced NVH is made possible with the application of damping materials in strategic locations throughout the vehicle.
The Liftback features a strong, modern mono-form shape made possible by its short overhangs and a low center of gravity exuding a youthful and proud stance. Color-keyed door handles and rear view mirrors contribute to the Liftback's consistent profile from front to rear. The front features a chrome-trimmed front grille centered between sharp character lines, which are integrated into its aerodynamic hood and windshield. Outer molding has been eliminated from the windshield and door glass to help enhance aerodynamics and reduce wind noise. The rear portrays a more substantial appearance with large taillights and a wide rear door for easy and ample cargo area access.
The Yaris Sedan has a long stretched cabin with an arched beltline and its tires pushed outward at each corner. Integrated bumpers and headlamps as well as a low center of gravity give the Yaris Sedan a modern and sophisticated look. Like the Liftback, it features a "T" face grille, which emphasizes the Toyota identity. In the rear, the taillights are bookends to a wide trunk that extends down to the bumper molding, which provides a more substantial appearance and allows for easy trunk access. Both the Liftback and Sedan will ride on P175/65 R14 tires with steel wheels and full wheel covers and offer available 15-inch steel or aluminum alloy wheels.
The Yaris S Sedan is designed to appeal to buyers looking for sporty styling. Side rocker panels, front and rear under bumper spoilers, 15-inch steel wheels and available aluminum alloy wheels give the Yaris S a more aggressive appearance.
Spacious and Practical Interior
The Yaris Liftback interior provides unexpected roominess and a comfortable cabin. The upscale interior provides remarkable design with four-way adjustable fabric front seats and reclining rear seating for three with headrests in all seating positions. The rear seats also fold down, providing nearly 13 cubic feet of cargo space.
Simplicity and practicality are built into the Yaris Liftback with easy-to-reach audio and climate controls, an array of storage spaces including a center console with built-in storage, and cupholders in the front and rear. The instrument cluster is center-mounted, high on the dash providing easy reach and visibility.
Standard convenience features on both the Liftback and Sedan include air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, a gated shift lever (automatic transmission only), tinted glass, digital clock, a map light, intermittent windshield wipers with mist control, and dual sunvisors with vanity mirrors.
With the longest wheelbase among key competitors, the Yaris Sedan interior conveys a feeling of spaciousness and unexpected refinement not usually found in a subcompact. The front dash is designed with center-mounted instrumentation, which is integrated with a stylish silver-painted center console. Storage and cupholders are in abundance, front and rear. Like the Liftback, the Sedan has rear seating for three with headrests in each seating position. Standard on the Yaris S and available on the Sedan are 60/40 fold down rear seats with a fold-down center armrest and cupholder. Folding the 60/40 split rear seats enlarges the trunk capacity, providing nearly 14 cubic feet of total cargo space.
Fun-To-Drive Performance and Handling
Powering both the Yaris Liftback and Sedan will be a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) that will produce 106 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 RPM. Both the Liftback and Sedan will be mated to either a five-speed manual or available four-speed automatic transmission. All Yaris models with an automatic transmission will be equipped with uphill/downhill shift logic to help reduce the frequency of gear shifting caused by the operation of the accelerator pedal during winding uphill and downhill driving.
Yaris fuel efficiency will be among the highest in the subcompact segment. A preliminary EPA fuel economy mpg rating for the Liftback is estimated at 34 city/40 highway for the five-speed manual and 34 city/39 highway for models equipped with the four-speed automatic. Fuel efficiency ratings for the Yaris Sedan are equally impressive with preliminary EPA mpg estimates of 34 city/40 highway for the five-speed manual and 34 city/39 highway for the automatic.
In addition to its exceptional fuel efficiency, Yaris will be EPA-certified as an Ultra-Low Emission vehicle (ULEV II).
Yaris will ride on a strong, stiffer chassis thanks to a newly developed suspension that includes a rigid L-arm MacPherson strut front and rear torsion beams. The stiff suspension and retuned steering gear ratios help to deliver fun-to-drive handling and excellent maneuverability with a class leading turning radius. As one example of Toyota's focus on continually improved production techniques, a new hydroformed torsion beam in the rear suspension provides necessary anti-roll stabilization, eliminating the need for a separate anti-roll bar.
Safety
The new Yaris helps protect its occupants with a reinforced cabin using front and rear crumple zones and energy-absorbing materials on the roof and doors. Yaris will be equipped with height adjustable headrests and three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions. The front seatbelts include pretensioners and force limiters. The rear seat will be equipped with the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) uniform child restrain anchorage system.
Safety is also addressed with standard driver and passenger advanced dual-stage front airbags that inflate at a higher or lower speed, according to collision severity. A front seat passenger sensor is designed to determine if there is a person in the seat as well as the person's weight category to determine whether the airbag should inflate and at the correct inflation power. Front-seat-mounted side airbags with first and second row roll-sensing side curtain airbags will also be available.
All Yaris models will also offer anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option.
Options
In addition to the array of standard convenience, performance, and safety features, Yaris will offer additional options to provide variety and enhance the customer's overall driving experience.
Yaris options include ABS, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags and cold area package. A convenience package is standard on all Yaris S and available on the Sedan and Liftback. The convenience package adds an AM/FM CD player with MP3 readability and universal mini-jack port, a rear defogger, 15-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers, a 60/40 folding rear seat (Sedan only) and a rear wiper (Liftback only).
Also available on Liftback, Sedan and S Sedan is a Power Package offering power locks, windows, and mirrors. For the Sedan, it also includes a tachometer, upgraded trim with integrated audio, cruise control, and ABS. For the Liftback, it adds a 60/40 split rear seat that slides, reclines, and folds completely flat.
With the Power Package consumers can also add 15-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, rear spoiler, remote keyless entry, or immobilizer (Sedan only) as stand alone options. Yaris will offer a choice of 13 different exterior colors with only two, Polar White and Black Sand Pearl, shared by both the Liftback and Sedan. Additional available exterior colors for the Liftback include Blazing Blue, Meteorite Metallic, Absolutely Red, and Bayou Blue. All Liftback exterior colors are matched with a Dark Charcoal interior fabric. Additional exterior colors for the Yaris Sedan include Pacific Blue Metallic, Flint Mica, Silver Streak Mica, Barcelona Red Metallic, Olive Mist, Jade Sea Metallic, and Nautical Blue Metallic. Yaris Sedan exterior colors will be complemented with a choice of two interior fabric colors, Dark Charcoal and Beige.
Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle limited warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60 months/60,000 miles and corrosion perforation for 60 months with no mileage limitation.

It was about time. We actually got the previous Yaris (disguised as Echo)in 99-2000 but without the liftback version.
Very unfortunate that such a nice car like the Tercel was put to rest and instead the public got the horrible Echo, with a design that reminded the East German Trabant!!!
Great that Toyota decided to bring such a nice car here as they do on European market.

Trust the demands of the american market to wreck a perfectly good award-winning car... Goodbye perky 70hp 999cc-engine (a turbo variant of which made for a hot performer) and phenomenal fuel efficiency, sporty original chassis and space-pod styling... hello larger, stodgy chassis, space pod being bent out of shape (and what the heck is that extra box doing lumped on the back of the red one?!), and over specced, far less efficient big-car engine.
Why bother keeping the same name, for pete's sake? It's not the same car any more!

Who... in the hell... came up with a name like "Yaris"? In no time flat, people are gonna be calling this car "YER ASS"... apparently a fact that completely eluded the powers-that-be at Toyota (or it could be my warped sense of humor working overtime).
Anyway...
The 3-door looks like a knockoff of the recently departed Chevy Metro 3-door (come on, you KNOW it does). The sedan doesn't look too bad, but I still don't like the center-mounted dash pod. Never have and never will... but I suppose that's the latest "in" thing with newer cars these days - I hope they become yesterday's fads very soon and put the damn dash in front of the driver where it belongs.

My prediction...The timing is good for the present market conditions and they should make a killing.
But I don't think it's a winner. The styling and interior suck. You would have thought the Echo experience would have educated Toyota more about the NA market. No kool factor what-so-ever. (unless you think the center speedo & tach is kool???) It's price point had better be real real low.
The Honda fit is going to clean up and take the Yaris buyers.

Forgot to mention, I see more 4 door Honda Fits in China than Toyota Yaris. I always talk cars there, they think the Yaris is ugly too? The Fit has a different look because the cab is forward while the trunk overhangs the rear wheels. (Think 55-57 Lincolns) That makes it break from the pack of that crowdwd segment.

I''ll be in the market for a car in June. I was thinking of a used Toyota or Honda, but this might just make me buy a new Toyota. For a low-end car, I think it looks great and it doesn't look too cheap either--think of other low end cars: Rio, Elantra. This looks much better. It also has great options. If I can pick one up for less that $13,000, I'm in!

Nice little car, probably totally reliable as all Japanese Toyota tend to be. More "conventional" than the Scions.
Should be a hit, especially if gas is $3 again in the spring, as is rumored to be probable by some of the powers that be.

While the hatchback looks acceptable, the sedan's front-end looks ungainly to my eyes (lights too narrow, bumper too high). But the good gas-mileage and Toyota reputation will make it a winner.

looks heavy hope that 105hp is in a usable range. The interior is so plastic. Don't think this one is going to do any better than any small cars. People in the us just don't like small cars. Even $3.00 gas is not going to sell this. Maybe $4.50 gas but that may be to cheap to help this abortion.

annie-It better be a lot less than $13k, since the better equipped Scion xA five door hatch is only a few hundred above that. The three door better start at no more than 11k or so.

Why no 4 door hatch? I think the Euros get the 4 door hatch at well as an engine that shuts off at long lights to save gas. We get a dorky 2 door and an echo restyle sedan. So much for liking the Yaris.

I just bought a 4dr hatch. In small cars, I've owned an MGB and a Dodge Colt Turbo (also with 105 hp and a hatch). My other car is a Saab 9-3. The Yaris will be used mostly in the urban environment - population approaching 1m. It takes discipline to know your actual automotive needs and to stick to them. I feel right now I'm ahead of the Joneses with too much vehicle - way ahead.
According to the dealership, the sales force fought to get this car for me and I appreciate the effort. Demand in Canada has been very strong. Perhaps this is because of the solid reviews it's been getting from Europe. The last car I dropped from my short list was the VW Golf TDI. Based on Edmunds' true cost of ownership as transposed from the Yaris' reliable predecessor, the ECHO, the Yaris was better value,
First thing I did was swap out the Bridgestone 3-seasons which claim to be 4-seasons. I put them on after-market rims for the summer and fall. I supplemented the B-Stones with Nokian WRs - a true all-season tire with exceptionally good reviews from the German automobile press. I had owned two sets of Hakkapellittas so I know what Nokians are all about.
I don't have a lot of km on this car yet but I'm loving it. It's got plenty of pep and is a fun, predictable, tracker; an easy car to drive. One writer called it a mini-Lexus and I can understand why. First thing you notice is the driver's position which, like the ECHO which preceded it, is high. Visibility is superb. The dash is very practical and I don't mind the center pod instrumentation a bit. I'm glad the lights are blue.
The stereo system puts out nicely and the HVAC system is just fine, offering instant (electric) heat while the engine warms up. When the heat from the engine takes over the electric heat shuts down. A clever inovation is the light that tells you when your engine is still running cold and which goes out when the engine warms up.
The car is drawing stares from all kinds of motorists and pedestrians. There are very few around and the design is visually appealing; modern and different.
The space inside is very large. I'm 5' 10". I'm not knocking elbows with passengers in the right hand seat. I could wear a cowboy hat in this car and it wouldn't touch the headliner.
Only regrets: no sunroof and no side airbags (which will be offered in the US).
Small cars are a blast to drive in the urban areas, and if anybody says they are unsafe, they obviously haven't seen the British TV show excerpt at GoogleVideos where a Daimler Smart car is run into a concrete barrier at 70 mph. The Yaris shares with the Smart the EU's highest front and rear collision ratings and was voted 'EU Car of the Year' in its 2000 version.
I'm working toward a driver-instructor rating from our best local driving school. If there was an ideal car you'd choose to teach a young person (or immigrant) how to drive, the Yaris might just be that car. I didn't need or want the ABS as threshold braking will be faster (Subaru studies) but I've got it.

A center-mounted dashboard; I guess that's one way to keep costs down. It appears that the steering wheel assembly could be mounted under the right-side dash for those markets that require it.
