Every year for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, a bunch of well-respected automotive journalists get together and name their picks for the best car and truck of the year. Last year, the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Chrysler 300/300C were announced as the winners at the show.

The short list of cars for this year is as follows: Audi A3, BMW 3-series, Chevrolet HHR, Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion, Honda Civic/Civic Hybrid/Si, Hyundai Sonata, Infiniti M35/45, Lexus IS 250/350, Mazda MX-5, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, Pontiac Solstice, Toyota Avalon, and Volkswagen Passat.

Trucks are the Dodge Ram/Ram Mega Cab, Ford Explorer, Honda Ridgeline, Hummer H3, Jeep Commander, Kia Sportage, Lexus RX 400h, Mercedes M-Class, Nissan Xterra, Range Rover Sport, Subaru B9 Tribeca, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota RAV4, and Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

From here, the journalists whittle it down to three cars and three trucks, and, like last year, they'll announce these at the Detroit Economic Club meeting just before the show.
