B&B unveils 350 hp Audi A4
The Audi fans over at Fourtitude
are reporting on the tuning program B&B unveiled at the Essen Motor
Show for the Audi A4 2.0 TFSI.
Starting with the factory standard 200 hp, B&B's 5-stage tuning program culminates in the EVO-R version, with a
fire-breathing 350 hp. As you might expect, that kind of power from 2 liters requires some significant modification,
including:
-
pistons
-
connecting rods
-
cylinder head
-
turbocharger
-
exhaust system
-
oil cooler
The EVO-R does 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. Chassis mods include a height-adjustable coilover suspension set, 18- or
19-inch wheels, as well as 4- and 6-piston brakes
All that performance, and storage space, too! Why, that Avant is almost practical...

Maybe that's impressive if you're a die-hard Audi fan. However, I'm guessing you can't really call it a practical vehicle. The MSRP for the Audi A4 Avant AWD is about $35,000. I'm guessing B&B's complete package is at least $15,000 so that puts the total at around $50,000. Also, I'm guessing that the nice gas mileage takes a huge hit when you have a 75% increase over stock power. Again, not that practical.
Then, consider the fact that you can purchase the Dodge Magnum R/T for under $30,000 (carsdirect.com shows just over $28,000) which is slightly faster and stores more stuff...
But, people who buy Audis aren't really buying them for practical reasons.

I hope 5.9 is a typo, you mean 4.9? The A4, even the wagon, isnt that heavy, and 150hp over stock?

Mark, Stuart just quoted the Fourtitude article which is probably a translation of some part of the German B&B site.
The "5.9" number is the first thing that jumped out at me about the the whole upgrade being a bit of a waste of money. If it was "4.9" that would make this a bit better (for the rich).

Good point to bring up the S4. Modernracer.com shows it to run about a 5.6 0-60:
http://www.modernracer.com/audis4quattro.html
That's with 344 HP for about $48,000. So yeah, seems like it would be better to go with an S4. On the other hand maybe the Audi buyer is well-off but not well-off enough to plunk down the $48k all at once.
Regarding the 0-60 times, the extra torque of the V8 S4 makes up for the 6hp shy of the B&B 350HP so maybe it really does just make 5.9 seconds...? Maybe the Audi has a really bad drag coefficient?
I just looked it up, it's .31. Pretty normal for a station wagon. Maybe the transmission is geared really high.

Here's a page from the B&B website with performance data:
http://www.bb-automobiltechnik.de/bb2004/en/produkte/motoren/audi/a4/8e/mau_v_a4_8e_20tfsi_200ps.php
The data are not up to date (they only show the EVO stage as 300 hp) but the 0-100 kph of 5.9 sec seems consistent with the data for the other stages. They cite the stock A4 0-100 kph time as 7.6 sec, by way of comparison. Quick euro comparison suggests the EVO powertrain package is around $12,000.

"Then, consider the fact that you can purchase the Dodge Magnum R/T for under $30,000 (carsdirect.com shows just over $28,000) which is slightly faster and stores more stuff..."
...and that's where its benefits end.

Gee, just buy a stock Subaru WRX-Sti for about 1/2 the price and just add $1000 in tweaks for equal performance.

Oh, I got to ride in the new A3 S-line last night in the rain. 3.2L Quattro with DSG... the car is fast and fun. It is the first of its kind to be registered in Canada and is yet to go on sale. :P

Wow? 5.9? That's an absolute pig, considering the numbers! C&D got my my 250HP Legacy to 60mph in 5.7 seconds! AND it's...well...NOT an Audi. :)
I know guys who have 300HP GTPs, and even with FWD they are able to hit 60 in 6.0. Something's fishy with that number. I know Audi's newest Quattro isn't the most efficient system in the world, but that's crazy.

Folks, please keep in mind that this is 0-100 km/h and not 0-60. Before you start jumping around screaming, "It's only 2 mph difference!" oftentimes Audi and VW transmissions require a shift from 2nd to 3rd to make that magical 100 km/h mark.
