The Detroit Free Press reported Saturday that Ford Motor Co. will cut 4,000 white-collar jobs in North America in 2006, mostly through layoffs. The company notified workers of the upcoming cuts in an internal e-mail Friday.
The cuts will include salaried and contract employees as well as workers hired through employment firms. Including the cuts already announced for the fourth quarter of 2005 brings the total white-collar job cuts to 6,750.
This is the first significant cost-cutting measure since Mark Fields took over as executive vice-president for Ford's Americas group. With all of these layoffs happening, hopefully Ford will realize when its gone beyond trimming the fat and into cutting its muscle.
