I thought the FJ comes with a V8, no?

No, not initialy at least. There really won't be a need for a V8, if you need that kind of power you should be looking for a larger truck. Once in low range, there will be no power issues whatsoever and it will save you some gas on road compared to a V8.

No, there has never been a hint from Toyota that a V8 will even be an option, and based on the vehicle size, weight, and the target market, it is unecessary.
The most suprising fact about the specs is the lack of color options.

Agreed, big power is not necessary for a trail vehicle like this is. Its about gears, capable 4x4 equipment, ground clearance and durability.

I think "Black Diamond" will actually be black, not white. Diamonds are usually white, so when they say black diamond...I'm gonna guess it's going to be black.

Yeah and uh, BLACK cherry doesn't necessarily mean red either. Probably a dark crimson. The color of semicoagulated blood if you will. You guys need help. I thought I was totally retarded when it came to color theory but then I came here and read this blog.

Yellow
Black
Red
Silver
Blue
Would be my guesses. I wish there was a 'white' somewhere in there, but silver is a good color (my 2nd favorite, behind white of course)

so, if I don't need or want 4x4 the wisdom is I don't need a manual transmission? Ludicrous.

There has been no official price announced, but the hints are that the base model should come in somewhere between $20k and $24k. This is based off the fact that Toyota has announced that this will slot between the Rav-4 and 4runner.
How loaded will the "base" be, would be a good question.
How much will the "fully loaded" version cost would be another good question.
Where did you get the 30,000 a year estimates, I have not seen a figure tho I have heard that at some dealer meetings they mentioned that it would be a "limited production" vehicle, so that contrasts with the 30,000 figure.

Looks like a cartoon. Or a truck mustang if you will. This must be a bad picture, because I don't remember any of the other ones making me twitch. I think this is why the Japanese are best left copying everyone elses styling.
And what is with the giant blindspot generator?

There also has never been a need for leather seats, but that is no reason to not sell them. Profitable cars aren't sold based upon what people need, they are sold based upon what people want. People like having the power of a V8, drive a mustang and you'll understand why.

An inline 6 is a good engine for torque. If a V6 I`d go V8 instead.
Its funny how a self proclaimed green company like Toyota can come out with a new SUV and not a word said, even an ugly SUV.
Pretend for a moment that this is a GM vehicle we are looking at here!

dc, you are absolutely correct. I should have said that I wouldn't buy the V8. that V6 has more power and torque than all of my cars, including one with a V8. I also wouldn't buy Toyota's V8 because it is relatively new and unproven.
whofan, unfortunately, when GM makes an ugly assed SUV, it is nothing more than a station wagen (aztec). their capable SUVs (Hummers) actually look good IMO. This Toyota is butt ugly, but it seems it will have the capabilities (relative to many other stock vehicles) to offset the ugliness. Besides, it will probably look better covered in dirt and mud as all 4X4s should be.

So will there be solid axles to compete with the Wrangler? Or independent front like everyone else?

Not sure if they are related, but the V-8 in the Lexus LS 400/430 has been in production for over fifteen years.

Its independant. Jeep has got the compact SUV segment nailed, and nobody has ever been succesful when competing with it. sounds like hummer is going to try, but it the concept seems to have IFS, so that will be a bust. The FJcruiser is considerably larger than the Wrangler; it shares underpinnings with the 4runner. Even with IFS it should fare decently against its competition: the H3 and Xterra which both have IFS.
There are plenty of people who wheel IFS vehicles and can go anywhere a jeep will go. My vehicle has a live axle, but I think I could deal with IFS if the rest of the vehicle made up for it in terms of durability in other parts or with great wheel travel. Hummers are independant suspension all around and they seem to do fine of pavement.
