Disasters bring opportunists, and unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina was no exception. Early on, reports came in that flood-damaged cars were the next scam to watch out for, and lucky for us, the National Insurance Crime Bureau has come to the rescue with its free service to protect us against buying flood-damaged vehicles.
Shortly after the hurricane, NICB officials on the ground created a database of VIN numbers and boat hull identification numbers affected by the hurricane. Originally meant for law enforcement officers, state fraud bureaus, insurance companies and DMVs, NICB has opened the database to the general public. Search for any VIN or HIN at http://www.nicb.org.
