This ought to be popular reading this year! The new edition of the EPA's Fuel Economy Guide for 2006 model-year cars and trucks is now available.
Highlights (all mpg numbers are city/highway):

  • Best, all categories: Honda Insight hybrid manual 60/66

  • Best mid-size: Toyota Prius automatic 60/51

  • Best sub-compact: VW Beetle Diesel manual 37/44

  • Best large car: Hyundai Sonata manual 24/34

  • Best standard pickup: Ford Ranger 2wd manual 24/29

In the "Overtaken By Events" department: the EPA's estimated annual fuel cost estimates are based on $2.20 a gallon for regular gas. Ah, those were the days! Their website Fueleconomy.gov has a calculator to update the estimates for current fuel costs.

[Thanks, Joseph]
