DARPA announced yesterday that by the mid-point of the semifinal event a total of 22 robot racers out of the field of 43 had successfully completed the obstacle course. The final semifinal run is scheduled for Wednesday, with the 20 finalists to be announced October 6.

Finalists will be selected based on their ability to operate autonomously, and navigate the course accurately while detecting and avoiding obstacles. So far, the Red Team's "Sandstorm" (pictured above) has been at or near the top of the leader board, as has "Stanley," the VW Touareg featured in our previous post.

The semifinal courses range from 2.2 to 2.7 miles. The Grand Challenge course will cover about 150 miles.
