According to Reuters, German newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten reported late Tuesday that DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes Group plans to cut more than 8,000 jobs in Germany, instead of the 5,000 previously expected.

Because of a labor agreement negotiated last year that guaranteed no layoffs in return for cost-saving labor concessions, any job cuts will have to come via buyout packages for workers volunteering to leave.

Mercedes Car Group employs about 180,000 in Germany.
