British driver Dan Wheldon's victory in the Indy Racing League's Peak Antifreeze 300 at Chicagoland Speedway virtually assures him of a series championship. All the Indy 500 winner has to do is take the green flag at the upcoming race at Watkins Glen to start celebrating.
At the other end of the spectrum, Ryan Briscoe suffered through the weekend from hell. After winning the pole in qualifying, Briscoe was disqualfied due to a technical infraction and had to start the race from 23rd, only to be involved in a horrific crash early in the race. Briscoe's wreck saw his car fly into the catch fencing in a ball of flame, ultimately leaving only the driver's capsule intact. Briscoe suffered a concussion, a bruised lung and two broken clavicles, almost certainly ending his season. A remarkable photo sequence of the crash is online here.
