CNet reports that Apple has applied for a patent for a gadget that can be inserted into an automobile cup holder that could be used for "a variety of devices that could include a digital music player."
Apple already supports custom iPod mounting kits from auto manufacturers and aftermarket audio companies, but a more universal solution would expand its market even more, if that's possible.

I'm sure that Apple's solution will be a masterpiece of industrial design, but if you can't wait you could just follow Crutchfield's advice and buy Belkin's $39.99 TuneDok, pictured at right. Comes complete with large and small 'cups.' Of course, the price could go up if Belkin ends up owing royalties on Apple's patent, so don't wait too long!
