Ask Autoblog: What's the best used entry-level luxury car
Autoblog reader Alex asks,
"I am trying to decide on what to buy for my next car. I am looking into entry-level luxary cars and what I have in mind are a BMW 3-series sedan, MB C-class and Audi A4. I have a limited budget and would like to spend below $30K, so probably looking into pre-owned certified cars, about years 2002 onwards."
After some serious thought I think I'd go with a
2005
Acura TSX, which isn't one of the vehicles you mentioned, but either meets or exceeds their levels of quality, is
light on its feet, just as fun to drive, can be had with a 6-speed manual and returns 29 mpg highway from a 200-hp
high-tech four-cylinder. And Kelley Blue Book lists the retail price (in my area) of
a 2005 model with 12,000 miles as a little over $28,000.
Any one else have some suggestions on what's the best entry-level luxury sedan under 30 Gs?

2nd Gen Acura Legends.. Sure they are 10 years old, but if you find a low miles coupe not much stands up for the price. Put a little money into rims and and a cd player (most had none oddly,) And you got a fast sexy looking luxary sports coupe. Solid engine, and body... Only bummer is the FWD.
As for 3 series in So Cal the markup on 3 series even used is insane, the 2 doors are massivly marked up. It is usally cheaper to buy a new 4 door then a 1-2 year old coupe, at the same engine/trim level. The last gen 3 will only hold value as most people do not like the new body style... go Bangle...

I've always been partial to the Lexus LS400, though the last year of that model was 2000.
A 2000 model with 60K miles is about $21K. If it were me, I'd find one that isn't from a rust state and have a good mechanic keep on top of preventative care. A very solid car.

I picked up a 2005 TSX 6-sp/navi a little more than a month ago and haven't looked back since. Every day, even when stuck in traffic or behind a slow driver or whatever, sitting in that car brings a smile to my face. If you can find a performance/amenities/quality package even remotely close, go for it. But if you want a new A4 or 3-series configured even remotely close expect to spend a hell of a lot more than $30k.

If you want a used 3 Series BMW, be sure to get it Certified Pre Owned. Otherwise, just simple maintenance (brakes, normal tune ups, etc) will add thousands to your overall costs.
Otherwise, I like the Acura TSX idea. You can get one brand new for under $27,000 right now (see carsdirect.com).

The Infiniti G35 would be at the top of my $30k list. You might be able to snag a new one at that price.
Of the three German cars mentioned, the most obvious choice is the BMW 3-Series. I think a reasonably equipped MB C230 with 6-speed manual could also be had for $30k. That would be my pick of the German models.

Used G35X or 2005 Subaru Legacy GT, both can be had for under 30 grand and have a good AWD system.

Personally, I would find it hard to take advice, especially about such a large financial decision, from complete strangers. Do you want a great interior? Is reliability most important? do you want a great drivers car? is fuel mileage a concern? more info on what you are looking for in the vehicle would be helpful.
That being said, I am partial to the 3 series.

Hello, one other option that might be worth looking into is the Lexus IS300. With the new model coming out it should lead to great price point.

Rear wheel drive, some good aftermarket options and great reliability.

You cannot beat a Lexus for quality, and long-term value. A 2003 GS would be a great buy, given the recent model change. Of the ones on your list, I would go with an Audi, just because you dont see a million of them on the road.

There is nothing wrong with a Lincoln LS V-8, you can get a newer car with more for less. something to be said for no resale value.

well for around 30k the choice is clear. Audi A4 or Acura TSX. Both are equally great cars and wont put a strain on your budget.
For example, i got a new A4 1.8 tiptronic with sports package, leather, sunroof, the upgrade sound system, for 30k even.
Your going to spend several grand more on a new 3 series once you add just a few options...the same is true for a mb c230. Not familiar with the Infiniti G35. I have look at it but the ones around where i live are way over 30k.
But apparently, the new Lexus is250 should be the best deal for the money when it goes on sale later this year. Even the is350 will be a super deal, just for the amount of hp you will get for the price, and plus its a lexus.

While not flashy like a Beemer, Audi, or Benz, or even a G35, a used Lincoln LS can be had in your price range.

I second SK's suggestion. 9-3 Aeros and Vectors can be had for $25k or less nowadays. And with today's gas prices, it's nice to know they get decent gas mileage too.
