The only thing that normally gives you free gas is a visit to the local Mexican restaurant. VW has a different idea; they plan on giving $50 in free gasoline to those who come in to test drive a Certified Pre-Owned car. The promotion is part of a direct-mail campaign that was launched in June. The direct-mail campaign goes hand in hand with new print ads that begin showing in magazines this past March. I have not personally seen these ads, which include technicians performing various duties to 'certify' used vehicles. They sound pretty funny, but certified used vehicles are a huge force in the industry now. In the first seven months of the year, the industry sold some 956,262 certified used cars and trucks. It's too bad $50 of gas doesn't go as far as it used to.
