If you're a storm chaser who wants to get up-close footage of tornadoes, but feel that your ordinary truck isn't up to the task, what do you do? You take the years of drawing spaceships as a kid and a learn-as-you-go welding technique and create this, the Tornado Intercept Vehicle. Seriously, this vehicle was created with the expressed purpose of chasing and driving through a tornado. This was once a Ford F450 dually truck. Now it is 13,780 pounds of steel armored tripod that you can drive. We applaud Sean Casey, the storm chaser who constructed this machine, for his ingenuity. Mad Max would be proud.

The aerodynamics are... well... bad. It's going to blow away.

Ford was just kidding about dropping the Excursion. This is the 2007 model.

Why would a vehicle that hunts tornados be in California? Also, even if this can protect against the wind from a tornado, can it protect against getting slammed with whatever a tornado can throw AT it? I wonder what would happen if a big tree landed on that Lexan dome?

I've seen this parked on a side street here in La Jolla (CA). Seriously funny vehicle. Note the black stickers on the front fender, one for each tornado encountered (Adam - the aerodynamics appear to work just fine).

it's not that the wind is blowing... it's what the wind is blowing...

Does it have anchors that deploy or something to keep it on the ground? The armour should protect it from debris somewhat, but 14,000 lbs is not very much compared to the power of a tornado. Maybe he only plans on going after weaker ones.

      ...does it come in black?
