The design of the new S-class sparked a bit of controversy when we posted on it last month. Nothing shuts down an argument over design faster than a heaping helping of horsepower, which this 2007 Mercedes S63 AMG has more than its fair share. Edmunds is reporting that the AMG-ified motor will be an all-new normally aspirated V8 producing 500 horsepower.
It's nice to see MB stepping back from forced induction. Blowers can often be seen in the marketplace as the cheap and easy way to achieve power. Perhaps Mercedes believed that in order to stay competitive with BMW it had to have the most powerful engines as fast as possible. Superchargers helped the company achieve that, although in the end many still prefer the long, linear power curve of BMW's V10 to any of the supercharged Mercedes motors despite the power gap.
